“An Armed Society Is a Polite Society” 0

The gunnularity draweth nigh, as yet another gun fireth itself.

Police were called to Sentara Careplex on Aug. 9 for a walk-in shooting victim. An investigation found that Blazer and a woman were at a home on Ambrose Lane at the time of the incident.

Blazer was reportedly handling a gun, when the firearm discharged and a bullet it (sic) the woman in the foot.

The Art of the Con 0

Neil Barsky, ex-WSJ reporter and current Wall Street analyst and hedge fund manager, suggests that, whereas Donald Trump has made a successful career of giving America the business, his ventures into the world of actual profit-and-loss businesses have not been quite so successful. A snippet:

Amid all the self-made myths about Donald Trump, none is more fantastic than Trump the moneymaker, the New York tycoon who has enjoyed a remarkably successful business career. In reality, Trump was a walking disaster as a businessman for much of his life.

“Pay No Attention to the Man behind the Curtain” 0

Defying the advice of the Wizard, Madelon Sprengnether does pay attention the man behind the curtain. She is not impressed.

At the heart of Donald Trump there is a man who is acutely sensitive to feelings of being wronged, made to appear weak or small (think of his obsession with his hands), or victimized. He sees the United States as being invaded by drug dealers and murderers from Mexico, describes open trade agreements as ‘raping’ the US economy and portrays internal and external terrorists (think Muslims) as running unchecked through our society.

Mr. Trump, I would argue, does not feel big, powerful, or in control. His appeal to a certain segment of the US voting population seems based on his identification with them in their self-perceived weakness and vulnerability, masked by an authoritarian promise that he alone can fix things—by consulting the “shows,” holding “meetings,” trusting the advice of his adult children (all of whom work for him and are hence beholden to him) and himself.

Getting a Leg Up 0

Oh, my.

It what can only be described as a rather usual crime, someone has made off with the leg of a 17-metre fibreglass dinosaur from Dinoworld Norge in Ørsta in Western Norway.

The travelling (sic) dinosaur exhibition discovered on Sunday that its Diplodocus model was missing one of its four legs. The massive leg was strapped to a trailer along with the other pieces of the model on Saturday night but on Sunday it was gone.

That puts me in the mood for a song . . . .

Minority Retort 0

I have from time to time noticed that one mark of a really good idea is that, once someone else thinks of it, it seems blindingly obvious.

Driftglass and Bluegal point out, in their latest podcast, that, thanks to the Fox News/Wingnut talk radio bubble, the hate-full Republican base likely believe they are the majority, even though they are not, because they have insulated themselves from other views.

Hence the coming rage when their candidate loses.

Aside:

I got a dollar to a doughnut that the husband in the second letter here is a Fox News devotee. Takers? (Krispy Kreme only, please. Delivery directions upon request.)

Parsing the Polls (Can “Unskewed Polls” Be Far Behind?) 0

Remember as you listen that the Young Turks were berning for Bernie. (They are young and innocent enough to believe that. after 150 years of unrelenting anti-socialist propaganda in this country, an avowed socialist, however benign his brand of socialism, would have had a chance in a general election.) Hints of that Bernie bern come out in their commentary.
