About a decade ago I tried six of the most popular Linux distros. 5 of them had no sound because they didn’t like my extremely common sound card. The last helpfully informed me there was no internet connection; wrong again.
Have they gotten any better since then?

    They sure have!

The issue here is not that Linux does not support some hardware, but rather that some hardware manufacturers do not support Linux, or do not support it well.

In 13 years of using Linux, I’ve not encountered a sound problem, but Broadcom and Realtek wireless and NVidia graphics can sometimes be annoying. Generally, you can get them working, but it sometimes takes some extra steps. Intel inside generally works smoothly, because of Intel’s excellent support of Linux. There may be a lag in getting support for bleeding edge hardware into the Linux kernel.

Here are some links that should help (note: there will be a “notice” at the top of the page and you will have to scroll down a bit; the notice goes away when a user is logged in):

Full disclosure: I’ve been a habitue of Linux Questions for over a decade. It is the friendlies Linux place on the inner tubes.
