Big Bucks in Bigotry 0

In the Des Moines Registry, Todd Blodgett, who used to monitor hate groups for the FBI, explains that not only does hate sell, it pays, and pays big. A snippet:

A full-time hater I monitored, the late Willis Carto, ran a media empire based on anti-Semitism with annual revenues exceeding $10 million during the seven years he and I were professionally associated. It’s NOT only hillbilly bigots or violent, tattooed, racist skinheads who support this putridity. The great-grand niece of inventor Thomas Edison, Jean Farrell, left $17 million to a Carto-controlled entity in the 1990s, to create doubt that the Holocaust never happened. From 1971 until the early 1990s, the former son-in-law of President Franklin Roosevelt, Curtis Dall, headed the Liberty Lobby, an organization that promoted anti-Semitism and white supremacy. Blaming Jews for societal strife has occurred since before William Shakespeare was born in 1564. But it’s now being stepped up, even in Iowa.

“An Armed Society Is a Polite Society” 0

The hunt for politeness drags on.

A Potlatch man was injured early Monday after being shot by his hunting partner, a 31-year-old man from Coeur d’Alene, reports the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office.

(snip)

He (the shooter–ed.) said they were together when Christensen shot a bull elk. The pair separated to go look for the elk, however the older male saw another elk and shot at it, but hit his partner in the thickly wooded area.

Both men were wearing camouflage hunting gear at the time.

PSA: Who Are the Virginia Beach Candidates? 0

The coverage of local Virginia Beach races (mayor, city council, and school board) is really pretty bad to the point of being almost nonexistent, as the House and Senate campaigns are soaking up all the headlines. I am disappointed, but I cannot fault the Pilot; like most newspapers, it’s already struggling.

As for broadcast media, someone once said, “If it bleeds, it leads” (the weather corollary is, “if it hails, it prevails”). I have seen no evidence to dispute that statement.

Thanks to Caroline Rye (see the sidebar, over there —–>), I have learned of two places where you can learn more about those races: the WAVY website, which has a “Candidates” section, and the VOTE411 Project of the League of Women Voters (at the VOTE411 site, you will need to enter your address to see local races).

Remember that, even though some Virginia Beach races are “district races,” every Virginia Beach voter can vote for every city council and school board candidate, both “at large” and “district,” for reasons that go back to the formation of Virginia Beach in the merger of the Town of Virginia Beach and Princess Anne County.

Indoctrinotion 0

A Philadelphia school teacher calls out a Republican for accusing him on “indoctrinating” his students. A snippet:

Two weeks ago, this paper reported that Val DiGiorgio, chairman of the Pennsylvania Republican Party, accused me, a civics teacher at Central High School, of distributing partisan campaign flyers to my students during school hours. He personally called Superintendent Hite, ensuring that I would be muzzled while the school investigated this claim. DiGiorgio repeated this claim on talk radio, claiming that Philadelphia teachers were using our positions for “liberal indoctrination” of public-school students. The story was soon picked up by Breitbart Media, where readers across the country called for my firing — or worse, violence against my students and me.

And it was all untrue.

Look for signs of politeness.

Greenwood County Coroner Sonny Cox identified the victim as 48-year-old Joe Darius Black, who died of a single gunshot wound to the chest.

Investigators say Gravley fired a gun at a road sign in a nearby intersection, the release states. The bullet “passed through or by the road sign” and traveled through a wooded area in front of the victim’s home.
