Protect yourself from those bedridden hospital patients.

When officers arrived on scene, they were told that a man visiting a patient was seen leaving a room following a single gunshot. Police say they searched the hospital for the man but were unable to locate him.

During the investigation, the man suspected of the shooting returned to the hospital and was interviewed by detectives.

Still Rising Again after All These Years 0

Monumental mayhem in the Tar Heel state. Here’s a bit from the report:

Competing demonstrations over a Confederate monument in Alamance County ended after two supporters of the statue were arrested for assault and disorderly conduct, according to police and media reports.

Police said one of the men, 39-year-old Christopher Overman, hit Elon University professor Megan Squire, who was protesting a statue in Graham, about 55 miles northwest of Raleigh. Squire researches online right-wing extremism at the university, according to the school.

And, in more news of still rising again . . . .

Nile Kinnick:

Too much time is spent getting ready to live and making a living and not enough in living dynamically and enjoyably right now. The most important thing – and I am sure I am right – is to maintain an active, alert interest in everything going on about you.

A Talladega Trumpling.

Addendum:

Apparently, the noose had been there for some time without having been remarked on.

That doesn’t make it any less disgusting. A hangman’s noose is a complex knot; it doesn’t get tied by accident.

The Art of the Con 0

At Psychology Today Blogs, David Kyle Johnson explores “the Galileo gambit,” which enables charlatans to con themselves and others into thinking they are onto something. A snippet:

When pseudo-scientists have been bested by the solid evidence and careful research of actual accredited experts (aka authorities on a subject), they will almost inevitably pull out this quote from Galileo:

“In questions of science, the authority of a thousand is not worth the humble reasoning of a single individual.”

(snip)

The Galileo Gambit engages in many mistakes, but the main one is this: it’s a faulty analogy. The fact that two persons have one thing in common does not mean that they have everything in common—or even, another thing in common. Yes, the authorities thought Galileo was wrong, and they also think that you are wrong—but the fact that he turned out to be right doesn’t mean that you are.

Things Were Dullsa in Tulsa 0

Ed at Gin and Tacos suggests that bizarre, convoluted theories that K-Pop and TikTok fans somehow affected Donald Trump’s Dullsa in Tulsa miss the more pedestrian and more likely explanation. A snippet:

. . . for all their bold talk and faux-populist defiance about rules intended to prevent the spread of COVID, it appears that some portion of Trump’s aging, maybe-not-in-awesome-health base is worried about the potential of getting sick at a big public gathering where it is all but certain that most attendees will refuse even the most basic precautions against contagion. It’s cheap talk to boast about how the virus is Fake News, but even the most brain-addled older people have to understand on some level that people over 70 have greater than a 10% chance of buying the farm if they get sick. All but the most slavish Fox News enthusiasts are likely to have some reservations, or to have a spouse unwilling to indulge their fantasies. Again, these events are tired and stale and pointless. Hardly the kind of thing you’re going to risk your life to attend.
