“There Can Be No Other Explanation” 0

In a fascinating post at Psychology Today Blogs, Ewan Morrison explores the attractiveness and possible psychological benefits of conspiracy theories to those who hold them by looking at his own father’s experience. (Note that the particular conspiracy theory that Morrison uses as a springboard for his article predates “social” media and has nothing to do with QAnon.)

A snippet:

Looking at my father, I can see that he had replaced his devoutly Christian mother’s explanation of the universe with his own surrogate conspiracy theory. He’d experienced a breakdown after losing his Christian faith and his new belief allowed him to set life goals accordingly.

I commend the entire piece to your attention.

Texans famously want very little from their government. But we need government leaders who can ensure we don’t freeze to death in our own homes.

Maskless Marauders 0

At Psychology Today Blogs, Alexandra Brewis and Amber Wutich discuss a recent study regarding wearing masks in these viral times. A snippet:

Those who most adamantly resisted the idea of mask-use expressed a complicated but recognizable mix of political and religious beliefs that aligned with the idea that Coronavirus was a hoax. As one couple who had already been infected put it: “We know where we’re going when we die. We put our trust in God. There’s no fear. I mean, as far as our kids, I … don’t necessarily want them to get it, but I want them to build the immune system towards it.” There were also fears expressed that mask wearing was harmful because it caused poisoning from carbon dioxide build-up (it doesn’t). Some had adopted the idea, promoted through social media, that natural immunity gained from non-masking was protective against a worse form of the illness (it isn’t). Fearing the virus – and masking — was thus understood as counter-productive.

A Notion of Immigrants 0

Arizona Congressperson Debbie Lesko takes a discriminating view. Here’s a snippet from the article by the Arizona Republic’s Laurie Roberts:

Today, it’s the remarkably compassionate Rep. Debbie Lesko, who apparently believes it’s just fine if undocumented workers want to pick the lettuce in her caesar salad and trim the bushes in her Glendale yard.

Just don’t put those “very good workers” in line to be vaccinated against a potentially fatal virus that has disproportionately attacked Latinos and other minority populations.

Aside:

Looking at this and the previous post, one is tempted to conclude that cruelty and callousness are Republican Family Values.
