Show politeness to your children.

One more time, “accidental” is not a synonym for “negligent” (unless, it seems, there is a firearm involved).

Michael in Norfolk catalogs the contrasts. A snippet:

Politicians of both major political parties bloviate about “American exceptionalism,” yet among advanced nations America is exceptional for its failures to provide universal health care and to simply maintain its infrastructure. The nation is a study in contrasts of immense wealth and abject poverty with the highest child poverty rate, access to the best technology and where poor students have to sit outside of fast food restaurants and Starbucks to access the Internet for virtual schooling during the ongoing pandemic.

“The Siren’s (Telephone) Call” 0

At Psychology Today Blogs, Matt Johnson looks at research which indicates that even the presence of a “smart” phone, say on a table or in a hand, can distract persons from their current activity, whether that activity is talking with a real live human being, doing a task, or solving a problem.

He sees attributes this to “counterfactual thinking.” Here’s a tiny bit

The smartphone represents an endless range of possible experiences. This proves to be incredibly stiff competition, making even the most interesting conversation seem unbearable by comparison. Like the songs of the Siren, our attention is warped by the mere prospect of what could be.

Dis Coarse Discourse 0

Cameron Smith thinks we are missing the point. Here’s a bit of his article; follow the link for the rest.

Too often, the personalities on our screens tell us that we’re good, and those who disagree with us want to destroy America. We may not know the point of our politics, but the attached entertainment industry has amazing clarity: Put eyeballs on emotionally driven content and monetize it. As a result, they’ve built a political equivalent of the World Wrestling Federation.

When we confuse governing and entertainment, the boring, tedious art of statecraft takes a back seat to the perpetual campaign.

Vaccine Nation, Reprise 0

David explains why Trump deserves no credit for coranavirus vaccines or vaccinations, despite the right-wing caterwauling that, for some fool reason completely disconnected from reality, he does (Warning: Short commercial at about the ten-minute mark).

Vaccine Nation 0

The AP reports that a high percentage of prison staff are declining to take coranavirus vaccines, even though prisons are among the hottest of hot spots for infection and death. Here’s a bit of the article.

The refusal of prison workers to take the vaccine threatens to undermine efforts to control the pandemic both inside and outside of prisons, according to public health experts. Prisons are coronavirus hot spots, so when staff move between the prisons and their home communities after work, they create a pathway for the virus to spread. More than 388,000 incarcerated people and 105,000 staff members have contracted the coronavirus over the last year. In states like Michigan, Kansas and Arizona, that’s meant 1 in 3 staff members have been infected. In Maine, the state with the lowest infection rate, 1 in 20 staff members tested positive for COVID-19. Nationwide, those infections proved fatal for 2,474 prisoners and at least 193 staff members.

We are a society of stupid.
