Be polite to other drivers.

On July 2, a truck driver was traveling along I-55 near the Memphis bridge when he passed a Chevrolet Malibu that was parked on the interstate. As he was passing, the suspect leaned out of his vehicle and fired three or four shots at the truck before speeding away.

The truck driver was not hurt, but the incident damaged the vehicle, the Crittenden County Sheriff’s Office said. The shooting was reported when the driver reached Tennessee, but Arkansas authorities say they just learned of the crime after the trucking company downloaded the video.

This is the second time an incident like this has been reported in the last two months.

Bob Molinaro, sportswriter extraordinaire:

Though the percentage of Alabama residents who are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 is among the very lowest in the nation, the University of Alabama, as well as Auburn, will be allowing capacity football crowds. This convergence of recalcitrance and fanaticism is dumbfounding.

Politeness is a family value.

Police say a 3-year-old girl accidentally shot her father while he was sleeping in their south Wichita mobile home on Wednesday.

Officers responded at around 7 p.m. to the 2300 block of East MacArthur and located the 30-year-old man who had a gunshot wound to his leg. The girl’s hand was also injured. Their injuries were not life-threatening.

Thus passeth another day in the NRA’s Garden of Bleedin’.

It’s All about the Algorithm 0

The Surgeon-General calls out the role of “social” media in spreading disinformation about COVID-19. A nugget (emphasis added):

“Modern technology companies have enabled misinformation to poison our information environment with little accountability to their users,” he said. ” They’ve allowed people who intentionally spread misinformation, what we call disinformation, to have an extraordinary reach. They designed product features, such as like buttons, that reward us for sharing emotionally charged content, not accurate content.”

He went on to note that social media algorithms often target users by pushing posts similar to ones that the user has interacted with in the past, “putting us deeper and deeper into a well of misinformation.”

Know-Nothings Redux 0

Title: Critical Erase Theory. Image: Two men wieding erasers on a volume labeled

The editors of The Roanoke Times paired this image with a column by Leonard Pitts, Jr., who points out that

For the record: critical race theory originated more than 30 years ago among legal scholars; it holds that race is a social — not a scientific — construct and offers a framework for understanding the role of systemic racism in the law and in legal institutions. It is taught, if at all, in law school — not high school.

So how did it become this sudden four-alarm fire in the house of democracy? The answer is depressingly simple. It is this year’s War on Christmas. It’s sharia law, gay wedding cake, and New Black Panthers. Which is to say, it is this year’s spur by which the white right, more easily stampeded than a herd of cattle by a lightning strike, is prodded to feel resentful, frightened and besieged — and vote accordingly.
