Sarah Silverman, among others, is suing the makers of AI bots for copyright infringement. She has the unmitigated gall to think that Tech Bros shouldn’t just vacuum up the work of others so as to line their own pockets.

A snippet:

The suits, filed July 7, accuse the two firms of using Silverman’s and two other plaintiffs’ work to enrich their AI systems, OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Meta’s LLaMA, in violation of book copyright law. It’s the latest in a stream of legal challenges to the training and output of AI systems, suits that have often accused the tech companies of lifting work without permission or pay.

“AI needs to be fair and ethical for everyone,” Matthew Butterick, one of the suit’s lawyers, said in a statement. “But Meta is leveraging the work of thousands of authors with no consent, no credit, and no compensation.”

Dis Coarse Discourse 0

The coarseness is zooming. Here’s a snippet from the San Jose Mercury News reporting on the rise of persons “zoom-bombing” public meetings with hate speech:

As government officials moved to provide remote viewing options beginning in 2020, malicious hackers started “Zoom bombing” meetings across the Bay Area, from city council proceedings in Walnut Creek, San Jose, Richmond and elsewhere, to gatherings of agencies such as the South Bay’s Valley Transportation Authority. Attendees were shocked by sudden racial slurs, pornographic images and more. Political provocateurs and unscrupulous commenters have continued bypassing added security measures using access links and codes that are legally required to be available to the public.

Market Farces 0

Steve M. reports on the latest step in Republicans’ anti-LGBTQ crusade appears to be attacking retailers who sell merchandise that said crusaders find offensive. Apparently, in their view, admitting the very existence of LGBTQ persons is now being portrayed as “grooming.” Here’s a bit from his article; follow the link for his reasoning.

If you’re saying that it’s a potential violation of the law to sell children’s products proclaiming that LGBTQ people exist, are equal citizens, and should be celebrated, you’re a very short step from declaring that it’s illegal to be a gay parent. If the presence of pro-LGBTQ clothing results in unlawful sexualization of children, so does the ongoing presence of an LGBTQ parent . . . .

And this from the party that claims to celebrate the “free hand of the market.”

Obsession 0

At The Roanoke Times, Betsy Biesenbach marvels at the recent hysteria over the idea that (gasp!) persons should be accepted for who they are. I commend her entire article to your attention, but this bit in particular caught my eye:

And by the way, if you believe simply looking at a rainbow flag or meeting a trans person or going to a drag show will somehow instantly influence your child, then you need to rethink the idea that gender and sexuality are fixed and immutable.

In a related vein, Leonard Hitchcock, writing at the Idaho State Journal, has a wonder:

What does it matter if a small percentage of the earth’s human population manages to sustain a sexual identity that differs from their birth identity? What harm are they doing? More to the point, why are there people who feel morally obligated to see to it that transgender humans don’t exist.

Both articles are worth your while.
