Disturbing 3

Illinois senator and Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama has been placed under the protection of the U.S. Secret Service, the Secret Service said Thursday.

A statement from Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said he authorized the protection detail for Obama.

I believe that, as with Transformers, there’s more than meets the eye.

I remember, when I was very young (I’m dating myself, but I have to get dates somehow), hearing stories of how President Truman would take early morning walks around Washington.

By himself.

It stinks that that is no longer possible.

I thought I had heard somewhere that once a candidate had said they were going to run, they automatically got Secret Service protection. Or am I delusional?

I was trying to remember that myself. I think it may have been once the primaries have started, or maybe once they won the nomination of their party.

I found something this morning, Opie, that makes me think you’re right. They can get protection if they can show they need it, before they get the nomination. Clinton already has it, but that’s because she’s the wife of a former president.
