A Notion of Immigrants, Rule of Lawless Dept. 0

Der Spiegel reports on the release of Andry Romero from the El Salvadoran prison to which the Trump maladministration had renditioned him because he spoke with an accent and had innocent tattoos and notes that

Andry has become what the man in the hood from Abu Ghraib was, or the bearded Murat Kunaz from Guantanamo: The symbol of a torture prison where America lost its soul.

The article is a painful and disheartening read, but, unfortunately, a necessary one in these Trumpled times.

Back when I was a road warrior, I spent a lot of time in Chicago. I loved my time in Chi Town.

Chicago is a toddling town that won’t let you down.

Maybe those folks who are disparaging it should stop listening to Fox News and give it a visit

Vaccine Nation 0

Via the Hartford Courant, physicians Daniel Tobin and Anthony Yoder express their concern that the Trump maladministration is hazardous to our health A snippet:

With the CDC and the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) essentially sidelined, we now find ourselves in a leadership vacuum and faced with misinformation that frequently contradicts itself and is void of scientific basis. We have witnessed seasoned subject experts forced to leave or resign key positions and panels rather than promote false information or misguided recommendations, only to be replaced with known opponents of vaccination that cite “facts” not rooted in data and research which have appeared in official CDC documents alongside those borne from rigorous scientific investigation. This only sows the seeds of confusion and without the ongoing guidance of true experts, the problem is only going to worsen, to the detriment of everyone.

The Sound of Silence 0

About this time 24 years ago today I was out back of my workplace in the smoking area with my boss and several other persons. (As an aside, he was one of the best bosses I ever had and no, I no longer smoke.)

We were listening to the silence–silence because the building was under one of the approaches to Philadelphia International Airport directly across the river, but, that day, no planes were flying.

I remember my boss saying, “I’m glad there’s a Texan in the White House.”

How wrong he was.
