Who, Indeed? 0

Robert Glover wants to know who America is for. A nugget:

It is a place where people starve to death, and seven out of 10 Americans are food-challenged, which means that they do not know where their next meal is coming from.

America is not about them.

It is a place where three million children go to bed hungry in this “great country” every night.

America is not for them.

It is a country where the elderly die from too much heat in the summertime and too little heat in the wintertime.

America is not about them.

Lost in a Lost World 0

Oh, my.

A Central Florida man who called 911 to say he was lost and being chased by wild hogs was arrested after, deputies say, they found stolen property in his backpack.

Andrew James Joffe, 24, of Chuluota, called 911 in Polk county around 1:50 a.m. Thursday, saying he didn’t known his exact location, but that he was walking somewhere along Deen Still Road.

The “stolen property” in his kit included, amongst other items, a GPS device.

Hiding in Plain Sight (Updated) 0

If you look really closely beneath the daffodils daylilies, you can see the mother duck sitting on her nest.

Mother Duck on nest

This is within three feet of the condo’s mailboxes under a little tree in the median strip of the parking lot. While we were there, she did not move–the only way to verify that she was alive was to see her blink.

We had another look this morning; she was still there, but facing the other way.

Addendum

Mother Duck on nest:

Here’s a picture taken today from a different angle.

Afterthought:

Residents have left dishes of water and of grass clippings for her. I don’t know whether ducks eat grass clippings, but it’s really very sweet.

Republican Jesus 0

A letter to the editor of the Roanoke Times sums it up:

Republicanized Christianity redefines the biblical view of humanity to include for-profit corporations; it demonizes the poor and ignores their exploitation despite the overwhelming amount of biblical data that teaches about God’s hatred for this practice. These injustices necessitated the prophets’ warnings about God’s intent to punish man.

How did we get from “blessed are the poor” to the republicanized message of “the poor get what they deserve”?

Stray Thought 0

I think I’ve figured out why hipsters prefer the Yassar Arafat look those silly beards that look like three days’ stubble.

They think it’s cool to look as if they’ve stayed up in their Mom’s basement all weekend playing World of Warcraft and flirting with Siri while forgetting to shave.

“An Armed Society Is a Polite Society” 0

Practice random acts of politeness.

Police are trying to piece together what led to the shootings. What they do know is that about 10:50 p.m., 29-year-old James Andrew Brown was in his Jeep and began to fire at random.

When the politeness was over and done with, three persons were randomly dead.

Truth and Truthers 0

The fellow who stole memorial signs from playgrounds honoring the dead in the Sandy Hook school shootings and who also claimed that the killings were a hoax and never happened has been apprehended, thanks in large part to Chez Pazienda and The Daily Banter.

He is not alone in his trutherism (sp?), in his ability to disavow facts because he doesn’t like them.

You realize, of course, such people are nuts.

Realize also that considerable resources, including

  • Fox News,
  • the wingnut thinktank complex,
  • ALEC,
  • the New York Times as long as it keeps hacks like Ross Douthat and David Brooks on its payroll,
  • the “main stream media” as long as it gives Cal Thomas, Charles Krauthammer, Megan McArdle, Christine Flowers, and their like paychecks (Google them yourselves–I’m not providing links), and
  • the rest of the “vast rightwing conspiracy” (for naming which Hillary Clinton was mercilessly reviled, but which exists nonetheless–too sophisticated to meet in smoke-filled rooms, but meeting the essential definition of “conspiracy,” that is, “coordinated”) .

are devoted to nurturing their nuttiness so as to undermine our polity.

Both sides don’t do it, and, until and unless the media stop pretending that they do, we will continue to be doomed.

Yes, I’m fed up. My country is being sold down the river (you will pardon the expression but it is most apt) and no one is paying attention.

The Adventure of the Empty House 0

According to James Howard Kunstler, it’s not just a Sherlock Holmes story; it’s life in these United States (as politicians are wont to say) today. A nugget:

That is, first of all, a place of far less influence on everybody else, in a new era of desperate struggle to remain modern. That fading modern world is the house that America built, the great post World War II McMansion stuffed with dubious luxuries in a Las Vegas of the collective mind. History’s bank has foreclosed on it, and all the nations and people of the world have been told to make new arrangements for daily life. The U.S. wants everybody to stay put and act as if nothing has changed.

Do read the rest, especially the to-do list at the end. Frankly, there’s not an item on it that I can take exception to.

The Entitlement Society, Men Are Pigs Dept. 0

At Wednesday’s DL, we naturally discussed the Santa Barbara shooter and his strange manipulative belief that he was entitled to sex with any and every woman just because he wanted it.

The women who were present at our gathering told scary stories from their own experiences. The bit that took me most aback was their agreeing that they do not wear skirts when they go out to clubs with their significant others; too often they have walked across the floor to a table or the restroom only to have strange men stick hands up their skirts just because the men felt entitled to feel up any woman within reach.

If you wonder whether “rape culture” is a real thing, think about that for a moment.

Gina Barreca comments:

Every girl remembers the first time she was degraded sexually in public. It is not, as the movies would have us believe, a wonderfully cheerful moment of sensual awakening and blossoming womanhood.

Update from the Foreclosure-Based Economy 0

This golf course development is in the trap.

So much for that title search thingee.

Homeowners in Statesville’s Fox Den subdivision say they were stunned last year to learn their properties faced foreclosure over money the community’s developer borrowed a decade ago.

Attorneys say it appears the loan, which is still tied to the homeowners’ properties, was not discovered during title searches when the homes were bought. About 16 homeowners and additional land in Fox Den are affected by the foreclosure, according to attorneys.

Afterthought:

The more news I read, the more I wonder whether some “real estate developers” are just one three-piece suit away from duping rubes at a carny.
