This little story has been simmering for about a week. Now the D. A. has triggered charges (emphasis added):

Montgomery County lawyer David M. Manilla will be charged Friday with involuntary manslaughter and a litany of weapons counts in connection with the Nov. 29 shooting death of a Bucks County deer hunter.

Groh, 52, was fatally shot in the chest with a high-powered rifle in a Richland Township creek bed along property Manilla owned. It is illegal to hunt with such a long-range gun in Bucks County, where only shotguns, muzzle-loaders, and bows are allowed because of the county’s population density.

Too many folks disengage their brains when they release the safeties on their firearms.

An education in firearms:

A gunman opened fire during a Florida Panhandle school board meeting Tuesday, police said.

WMBB television reporter Nadeen Yanes told her station that the man came up to the podium at the Bay District School Board meeting and said he had a motion. He then pulled out a can of red spray paint and painted a V with a circle around it.

Yanes told the station he pulled out a handgun and started talking. She said school board member Ginger Littleton hit the gunman with her purse and he pushed her to the ground and started firing randomly.

A .22 is substantially larger than an air gun pellet.

Police say a man who believed he was holding an air gun shot his sleeping friend dead in bed with a .22-caliber rifle.

Sadly, this seems not unrepresentative of the level of competence of many of those who glory gunnery.

Another handgun decides to ad lib:

A man accidentally shot his young son and his own mother Saturday morning.

The man was cleaning his 9 mm semiautomatic handgun when he shot both his 4-year-old son and his own mother, Doña Ana Sheriff’s Department investigator Bo Nevarez said.

All seriousness aside, if you’re not careful enough to unload a gun when you are clea–never mind.

A city woman told police a burglar barged into her 3rd Street home Monday and shot her and her infant son, but investigators say the baby’s father actually fired the shots — accidentally — and then fled town.

No doubt the gun magically went off by itself.

In an amazing burst of creativity, she initially blamed the fabled “unknown black man.” Fortunately, the cops didn’t fall for it.

A suspect has been arrested in a shooting at Mid-Atlantic Christian University. He is claiming that the victim had threatened him.

The police and courts will have fun sorting that out. What I find interesting is what a search of his room turned up (by the way, the campus bans firearms):

Police searched Amyx’s dorm room in Presley Hall and found a 9 mm handgun, a .40-caliber handgun, a .38-caliber revolver, two boxes of .40-caliber bullets, a half box of .45-caliber bullets and two .45-caliber magazines, a bullet proof vest, a knife, a tactical flashlight and multiple holsters, according to the warrant. They also found a Bible in a case.

Another burst of courtesy:

Officers were called to the first block of Leader Drive in the Newark Oaks community about 11 p.m. to investigate a report of shots being fired, said Senior Cpl. Trinidad Navarro, a New Castle County police spokesman.

Upon arrival, officers found a 2000 Dodge Neon that had been parked in the street damaged by gunshots.

But wait! There’s more! Up the road a piece:

(A) boy was struck by the fragment Sunday night in Reading. Police say a man fired a gun into the floor and a bullet fragment went through to the first floor, striking 2-month-old Michael Johnson in the head.

According to the story, the gun magically went off by itself.

Yet more politeness grows from the barrel of a gun.

A Delaware County (Pa.-ed) motorist chased two African American women who had passed him and caught up to their car at a nursing home, where he pointed a handgun at them and called out racial slurs and expletives, according to court documents.

Robert G. Lambert, 52, of Trainer, who is white, has been charged with aggravated assault, terroristic threats, harassment, and ethnic intimidation in the incident.

He was dawdling down the road “at a low rate of speed” when they passed him on the way to work.

Also, just down the road from this guy, another burst of politeness:

“Stanley admitted that he fired up to 10 rounds from his apartment and stated he was shooting at the sky,” according to the 36-year-old’s arrest affidavit.

But that’s not how the people near the bullets remember it.

Stanley allegedly fired from his third-floor apartment window between 7:36 p.m. and 1:40 a.m., when New Castle County SWAT officers took him into custody. The officers used an explosive on his door, then sent a robot into the apartment as a precaution before they went in themselves.

Defending her 75 cats:

The SPCA and animal control were called to the residence on Leighton Terrace around 1:00 p.m.

During the initial investigation of the house, officials say the female homeowner pointed a gun at Pennsylvania SPCA Law Enforcement Director George Bengal. Bengal was forced backed down the steps.

Gunning it on the road:

The incident began about 8:30 p.m. in the 900 block of N. DuPont Highway when a 42-year-old Wilmington driver made a lane change in front of a vehicle driven by the suspect, Daniel Hilliard, police said.

Hilliard became upset, honked his horn and tailgated the victim before pulling alongside him and brandishing a black handgun at the victim and his 31-year-old passenger, police said.

He was just trying to be polite and now faces criminal charges for “aggravated menacing.”

Children must be taught from a young age that politeness grows from the barrel of a gun.

(The police spokesman–ed.) apologized to me (the columnist–ed.) profusely. He swore he did not know why James Chavez put a loaded gun in his 4-year-old daughter’s school backpack.

It is the craziest of stories. The girl’s Molholm Elementary School pre-kindergarten teacher was gathering up the kids’ belongings Wednesday when she got to the backpack.

It was heavy. She looked inside. The cops were called.

Closer to home:

An 18-year-old woman is under arrest after, police say, her 3-year-old child fired a shotgun, hitting a firehouse.

Who needs the full armor of God when he has the full armament of Smith and Wesson:

A federal judge on Monday declined to block enforcement of a new Georgia law that bans guns in places of worship, but he also rejected a request to dismiss the suit brought last month by a group seeking to make the law less restrictive.

GeorgiaCarry.org; the Baptist Tabernacle of Thomaston; GeorgiaCarry.org former president Ed Stone and the Rev. Jonathan Wilkins filed suit against Georgia’s exemption for churches, saying church employees and worshipers should be allowed to arm themselves for safety.

I guess she just as easily could have shot up the truck with a knife.

Oh.

Wait.

Officers say a domestic dispute exploded in gunfire when Donna Covely grabbed her husband’s 9-millimeter pistol and opened fire on his truck.

Her husband wasn’t in the truck and nobody was hit.

Miss Manners would be proud.

One:

I feel the same way about tailgaters, but trying to off them is probably not the best way to express it:

Haislip was tailgating Crickenberger, who then ran a stop sign, a sheriff’s news release said.

“Crickenberger became mad as to the way Haislip was driving,“ the release said.

When Haislip pulled off at the Harvey Williams Garage, Crickenberger followed him. Cursing between the men turned physical, the release said, and Crickenberger reportedly took a .380 handgun from his car and shot Haislip in the neck.

Two:

And squeezing off a couple of rounds withing city limits just for the heck of it is frowned upon by persons within range:

Officers were called about 9:15 p.m. to the golf course in the 600 block of Academy Street for a report of shots fired, according to Lt. Mike Green. There, he said, they found a “possible intoxicated subject” sitting in a wooded area with a .40-caliber pistol.

Three:

The Driving Lesson.

Campbell, 17, told officers “his uncle fired numerous shots at his vehicle, shattering the front and rear driver’s-side windows,” as he was driving.

Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Jeremy Boggs said in court Tuesday that Campbell fired six times at the vehicle Samual Campbell was driving north on Jack’s Hill Road. Boggs said four of the shots hit the vehicle and two missed.

“Campbell believes that his uncle did this because he accuses him of driving too fast on the roadway,” the search warrant stated.

The way to prevent this stuff is, of course, to have more bozos packing heat. (By the way, these were both members of a Neighborhood Watch organization.)

Reginald Campos, 44, charged with first-degree felony attempted murder, claims he fired in self-defense when David Serbeck cocked his weapon and raised it toward him.

Serbeck, 37, whose spine was severed by a bullet from Campos’ gun, claims he had placed his pistol on the ground and kicked it away before Campos opened fire shortly after midnight on July 22, 2009.

Guns don’t rape people. People rape people.

State Parks rangers, Santa Cruz and Santa Clara Sheriffs deputies are searching for a man who allegedly threatened two young women with a handgun and demanded sexual favors at Castle Rock State Park.

No doubt the NRA will leap to the defense of this guy.

Polite, maybe (I’ve made my thoughts on this clear).

Police say an Enfield man accidentally shot his friend in the head while showing him a gun.

Police say 27-year-old Raymond Moule was inside his apartment showing the victim a handgun when it went off. Moule faces charges including assault, reckless endangerment and possession of marijuana over four ounces.

Polite, maybe (though I truly do not think that courtesy flows from the barrel of a gun), but not necessarily very bright.
