Nuns with guns?

There are reasons why Hammer regards the Legislature as her personal bonbon box of happily willing factotums. Law and order sells. Crime sells. And fear never goes out of fashion. So it is understandable that Hammer’s compliant charm bracelet of pols are ready to accommodate the NRA’s desire to allow anyone who possesses a concealed weapons permit to openly carry firearms in public.

Since “Project Gunrunner” began in 2008, over 30,000 cartel-related deaths have been recorded in Mexico. Thus far, the only reported successes from these operations appear to be the arrest of 20 arms traffickers by the ATF this January. Given the immeasurable damage that these operations are likely to have caused, and the little information available on them so far, both governments still have a lot of explaining to do – and soon.
In between the two excerpts, the story explores the PR aspects of the story. The American and Mexican governments said different things about who knew how much and when. Both governments agree that, although the Mexican government was briefed on the sting, they were not informed that it involved releasing more guns into the Mexican killing zones.

Politeness is breaking out all over.
Police received a chilling phone call late Monday afternoon from a 15-year-old boy telling them his friend had been shot.
Officers arrived at the scene to find a 16-year-old girl with a fatal gunshot wound to the chest, Clayton police spokeswoman Tina Daniel said. The shooting occurred in a wooded area behind a home in the 4100 block of Dunn Road in Ellenwood.

Florida Republicans want to encourage politeness by further allowing folks to pack heat on campus and forbidding adoption agencies and doctors, including psychiatrists, from asking clients about gun ownership.

If you think Evers’ First Amendment assault on the doctor-patient privilege has about as much chance at passage as Jared Loughner merely getting probation for his alleged role in the Arizona shootings, well, don’t be so hasty.

By the standards imposed by Evers, R-Lock & Load, a psychiatrist treating a patient for depression would be barred from determining if the patient owns a weapon, or even making a note about it. A doctor prescribing medication that may induce mental side effects could be precluded from asking if the patient owns a weapon — and, again, prevented from adding a notation to the patient file.
The blatant political pandering aside, this is not about hunting, nor target shooting, or nor even self-defense.
Nor is it in any way about a “well-regulated militia” (or a “well-regulated” anything).
Guns are to gunnuttery as shoes are to foot fetishism–objects of compulsive, unrestrained, unreasoned desire.

Polite maybe. Stupid, yes.
Quibble: I don’t think “supervised” is a good word in the first line. How in the world can a 15-year-old be expected to “supervise” a grown-up, even when the younger is plainly the more grown-up of the two?

This is apparently quite important, if only as a measure of the requisite Republican machismo. Or perhaps as visceral proof that the candidates love Freedom. Or perhaps it’s meant to suggest that we should all sleep better at night knowing that the Republican chairman is locked and loaded. Or maybe it’s just Republicans behaving as parodies of themselves.
