For example, is this one truth or dare?

A bill that would allow gun-toting bar patrons to drink alcohol. The new Virginia law, signed by the governor in April, states that it’s fine to bring a gun to a bar, but that those who do so cannot drink. Gun lobbyists are now complaining that this law treats the gun owners as second-class citizens, denying them the equal right to drink like everyone else. The gun lobbyists are pushing for a Virginia law that (in the words of one gun-rights activist) would allow gun licensees to tote their concealed weapons and drink as much as they wish – “as long as they are not drunk.”

One teenager was seriously wounded and two others were injured in the Mantua section of the city Sunday when an unidentified gunman fired into a crowd walking from Fourth of July celebrations on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, police said.

The teenagers, whose identities were not released, had crossed into West Philadelphia on the Spring Garden Street bridge. They did not appear to have been targeted, (Philadelphia Police Officer Christine–ed.) O’Brien said.

Don’t even think of trying to convince me he could have done this with a knife or a baseball bat.

Aside:

Once again, I am not against guns.

I do find laughable the notion that everyone’s running about packing heat is going to make public life more peaceable.

Guns don’t kill people. People kill people. Except when guns just accidently go off on their own.

Then the people have nothing to do with it, except the ones in the way.

A man who lives in an upstairs home of the same building was handling a handgun when it accidentally fired through the floor and two walls and hit the child, police said. The man was showing the recently purchased weapon to a woman when it went off.

The (three-year-old–ed.) boy who was injured was home with his mother and two siblings at the time of the shooting.

The boy is in the hospital in “poor, but not critical” condition.

Neighbors say the shooter has always been a little nutty about his lawn.

The 69-year-old University Park man charged with fatally shooting a neighbor whose puppy urinated and defecated on his prized front lawn is arguing that he acted in self-defense after the confrontation turned violent.

The shooter claims that his neighbor intentionally loosed the feared beasty upon his lawn. In response, he pulled his gun; the dog-walker then started to punch him (politely, no doubt), so he shot the dogwalker, politely no doubt.

The dogwalker’s wife claims that witnesses saw the shooter chase the dogwalker down the street, then shoot him. Once again, politely, no doubt.

There’s a reason bar owners oppose this kind of bill. They spend a lot of time around folks who are liquored up.

Guns in bars legislation is locked, loaded and ready to go once again. Yesterday, the state senate voted to override (Tennessee–ed.) Governor Phil Bredesen’s veto of a bill to allow handgun carry permit holders to bring weapons into bars and restaurants that serve alcohol.

Meanwhile, in Delaware,

A lawsuit funded by the National Rifle Association was filed Thursday in Delaware Chancery Court seeking to lift the Wilmington Housing Authority’s ban on residents’ possessing firearms.

These folks won’t be satisfied until every town is like this one.

Except when the gun belongs to a policeman. Then it somehow manages to go off on its own.

Unrelated, but on the same topic: Karen has a sad tale.

In this case, the authorities seem to have decided to make someone pay. The shooter was not a cop.

It was kid, playing with a gun left unattended by its owner.

Mr. Glock, meet Mr. Crucifix.

Louisiana state Rep. Henry Burns (R) has introduced a bill in the Louisiana House that would allow churches to institute a “security plan” enabling congregants with concealed weapons permits to carry guns into churches and temples.

Churches and temples, eh? What about mosques?

Neat twist: Making drink while packing an issue of discrimination (emphasis added)

Philip Van Cleave wants every Virginian who has a permit to carry a concealed handgun into a bar to be able to have a drink – or he wants no gun carrier to be able to drink.

His aim is to force lawmakers to expand the rights of concealed-handgun owners in bars or rescind the current exception that allows law-enforcement officers and commonwealth’s attorneys to carry concealed weapons and consume alcohol.

“We’re not allowed to drink, but they can,” Van Cleave said. “That’s two classes of citizens.”

The road rage guy I talked about here has apparently killed himself rather than go back to the slammer. He didn’t like the slammer.

I’ve felt road rage a couple of times. I deal with it by making fun–sometimes profane fun–of the other driver. Quietly. Behind closed windows. Without gestures.

“Honest, Occifer, it just suddenly went off all on its ownsome. I don’t know what it was thinking.”

Police say a man was showing off a gun around a small crowd of people after leaving a corner bar. That is when the gun suddenly went off – striking the 22-year-old woman in the chest.

That’s why police lock down the schools when someone is spotted carrying in the neighborhood.
