Shacked Up 6

I use my digital camera frequently on the job. I commonly take 200 to 300 pictures a day when I’m on the jobsite as I work to document procedures and processes at the cooling tower place.

When I started this gig, I switched to rechargeable batteries because I was going through two sets of alkaline batteries every three days.

Normally, I get my rechargeables at Radio Slum, because it’s convenient, because I’ve always gotten value for my dollar there, and because I worked there for a while and have fond memories of that experience.

Frankly, Radio Slum rechargeables wear like iron.

Recently, though, I broke down and bought some store-branded AAs at a major hardware chain, because I wanted some extras and because the store was on my way (I won’t mention their name, but if you have four of them and a wildcard, you have an unbeatable poker hand). On the side of the batteries was written, “15-minute recharge.”

What should have been written was, “15-minute discharge.”

They lasted for three charges. Now they have to be “dispose(d) of properly.”

Back to the Shack.

    Wow, that’s pretty bad.

HA! I just got 10 packs of AA (4-pack) for $10. I could care less if these batteries go out after 10 pictures; I’ll have enough to make up for the difference had I bought real batteries.

FYI: There’s a funny video circulating. Check my site….you’ll know it when you see it. You’re sure to get a kick out of it.

    To Opie:

Yeah, and it was four-pack of batteries and ALL FOUR OF THEM went west in a heartbeat.

    To Phillybits:

You obviously ain’t using your camera as much as I use mine. Heck, when I walk out into the plant, I put extra batteries in my pocket so I’ll have them when the darn thing dies.

(And, since I use mine 90% for work, I might even deduct 90% of them batteries . . . .)

I learned more about that camera in the first two months at the cooling tower place than I learned in the previous two years. I can make that sucker do somersaults now.

And I’ll do site-checking tomorrow. I’m pretty much toasted. It’s been a long deadline week.

During last Christmas’ shopping season, there was a local hardware store that was selling boxes of AAA batteries, 40 count, for $1. I bought a couple and found that the hassle of changing batteries every 4 pictures or so was just not worth it.

(I hope Chris doesn’t read this comment since he always teases me about being cheap anyway.)

Chris & Joe had the rechargeable batteries for RC airplanes. They just don’t get the job done. I try to be as friendly to the enviroment as I can, but if I have to use batteries, I’ll buy the copper top brand every time.

(Opie, I should tell him about this!)

You may be interested in this Flickr group then.

Give me time. I might be getting a second, 35mm Minolta to really start practicing and learning about technique since using a point and shoot only offers so much ability to fine tune shots and play with settings.

I still go through batteries pretty regularly, though.
