Hope for the SS United States 2

Rusting away in Phialdelphiaville:

SS United States

Local philanthropist H.F. “Gerry” Lenfest has pledged a $300,000 matching grant to help a nonprofit purchase the SS United States, the iconic Cold War-era ocean liner docked in South Philadelphia.

The record-setting 990-foot vessel, which has languished at Pier 82 for more than a decade, was offered for sale in January by Norwegian Cruise Lines for an estimated $20 million.

    I think that the SS United States should sail agin. It represents the finest American creativity and should be preserved in full operation. We should be able to find the funds to restore the ship, as it would surely restore a sense of pride to a disheartened America.

    I agree completely.

    Persons go crazy because some old house that has no distinguishing marks other than old age (much like me) might be razed, while this marvel of engineering rusts into oblivion.
