Virginia Beach Hands across the Sand 3

From the local rag:

To protest of offshore drilling and to promote clean energy, about 1,000 people held hands along the Oceanfront on Saturday.

The event was part of an international campaign called Hands Across the Sand. In Virginia Beach, the event at 31st Street attracted participants with signs and petitions. Starting at noon, the line stretched from 31st Street to 22nd Street with a few gaps, and participants shuffled down the beach and held hands.

“I’m very, very excited. In my book, it was 100 percent successful,” said Eileen Levandoski, organizer of the Virginia events. “This was phenomenal, the fact that we were able to pull this off in the first place.”

From my position, I did not realize how far the line stretched. There were other events at other local beaches, as well as throughout the country.

I was near the north (31st Street) end, near King Neptune.

As persons arrived, they were advised to enjoy the beach and Boardwalk, and then move to the beach, remaining close to the Boardwalk so as not to interfere with the beachgoers, a little before noon.

Here the line starts to form:

Beachgoers asked us what was going on. Just within my hearing distance, several spontaneously joined us.

Thanks for the post, PVF! So happy you joined hands with us.  It was an amazing event and I’m on pins and needles waiting for the photos from our pilot who made two passes by.  I had reports that the line extended all the way to 14th Street!  The pics will confirm.  Stay tuned.

The public transportation system here is less than desirable. One of the things I miss about Philly–Philly has transit. The natives, or course, gripe about it all the time, but they really don’t know how good it is compared to other parts of the world.

I’m linking to a post from my buddy Brendan tonight. It is germane to your comment.
