Mitt the Flip in His Merry Oldsmobile 0

The Oldsmobile, like Mitt the Flip’s old policy positions, has disappeared.

Cynthia Tucker reports on the current flip, automotive division. A nugget:

So Romney has once again had to distance himself from —well, from himself. On automobile industry bailouts, though, Romney’s contortions have been more convoluted and difficult than on health care reform because they required a triple-flip, a move that had to be hard on the joints of a middle-aged man. (Those moves should have been hard on his integrity, too, but he seems to have surrendered that for the duration of the campaign.)

The Booman:

The president’s decision to loan money to the auto industry was the most unpopular part of his recovery efforts, but he continues to be vindicated. Chrysler has paid off its $6.7 billion in loans from our government and Canada’s, and that includes the full interest payments. And it paid back the money six full years ahead of schedule.

Rapture Rapup 0

I thought I was done with this topic, but the title of this column by Clarence Page was just too good to pass up. So is the rest of the column.

In all the analysis and theorizing and fulminating about the once and future rapture crazes, no one I have read has pointed out the obvious.

I suspect that is because, in this country, once you call your particular brand of foolishness a “religion,” and particularly if you label it “Christian,” it becomes forbidden to say this:

The people who bought this song and dance are nuts. Unconnected to reality. Loony-bin crazy. Whack jobs. Not ready for prime time.

And the persons who orchestrated the song and dance are pathological delusionists or sociopathic frauds and liars or both.

The sincerity of their beliefs is irrelevent.

Sincere foolishness is still foolishness.

Much fun is being had at the prospects of the new docu-adulation-mentary about Sarah Palin.

I don’t have anything to say about it, for it mocks itself. John Cole, though, has compiled a list of suggested titles from the commenters at Balloon Juice.

Nothing To Do, Nowhere To Go 0

Not good.

Bloomberg:

Jobless claims increased by 10,000 to 424,000 in the week ended May 21, Labor Department figures showed today in Washington. The median estimate of economists in a Bloomberg News survey called for a drop to 404,000. The economy grew less than forecast in the first quarter, a separate report showed.

(snip)

The Labor Department revised the prior week’s figure up to 414,000 from the 409,000 initially reported. There were no special factors behind last week’s increase, a Labor Department official said as the figures were released.

Sources of National Debt

Via TPM, which remarks:

The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities has updated and refined a widely cited chart, laying out the origins of the country’s current fiscal trajectory. And as before, the lion’s share of the problem comes from ongoing George W. Bush-era policies — particularly deficit-financed tax cuts, which eliminated Clinton-era surpluses and left the Treasury poised for a huge hit when the financial crisis and economic downturn further eroded federal revenues.

Republican Health Care: “Don’t Get Sick. If You Do Get Sick, Die Quickly.” 0

Republicans bridled when Congressman Alan Grayson said that the Republican Health Care Plan was

Don’t get sick. If you do get sick, die quickly.

Well, now the same folks who campaigned with bogus claims that President Obama’s health care plan would destroy Medicare continue their crusade to (you guessed it) destroy Medicare. From TPM (details at the link):

The GOP continued its bloody walk into the Medicare buzzsaw Wednesday, when 40 out of 47 Senate Republicans voted in support of the House GOP budget, and its plan to phase out and privatize the popular entitlement program.

The test vote failed by a vote of 57-40. But the roll call illustrates that Medicare privatization — along with deep cuts to Medicaid and other social services — remains the consensus position of the GOP despite the growing political backlash against them.

Just as a memory refresher, here’s an encore of Congressman Grayson:

Republicans: They got theirs. To hell with everybody else.

Cantor’s Cant 0

Andy Borowitz gives Eric Cantor (R–Embarrassing Virginia) the raspberry. A nugget:

One day after Rep. Eric Cantor (R-VA) stirred controversy by withholding funds for tornado relief, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) took the extraordinary step of declaring Rep. Cantor a disaster area.

Within hours of the declaration, FEMA officials were dispatched to assess the damage to Mr. Cantor’s status as a human being capable of empathy.

Afterthought:

The Republican Party slogan pretty much appears to be, “I’ve got mine.”
