Facebook Frolics, Like It or Not Dept. 0

The ACLU steps in to protect your “Likes” in Virginia, where some speech is too insignificant to be free:

The ACLU wants a federal judge to add “liking” something on Facebook to the list of inalienable constitutional rights.

The civil liberties group joined the social network this week in filing amicus briefs with the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals in Richmond, arguing that a District Court judge was wrong in refusing to grant free-speech protection to “liking” something on Facebook.

District Court Judge Raymond A. Jackson ruled this spring that employees of the Hampton Virginia Sheriff’s Office, who were allegedly fired because they “liked” the Facebook page of Sheriff B.J. Roberts’ opponent in the 2009 election, didn’t do enough to warrant constitutional protection.

Really, now, if folks could get fired for expressing their “Likes,” their “Likes” are hardly insignificant now, are they?

Or, alternatively, the firings could be ruled insignificant so the paychecks could keep coming.

Nothing To Do, Nowhere To Go 0

Just the numbers. Speculation at the link:

Jobless claims unexpectedly dropped by 6,000 to 361,000 in the week ended Aug. 4, Labor Department figures showed today in Washington. The median forecast of 43 economists surveyed by Bloomberg News called for an increase to 370,000. A spokesman for the agency said there was nothing unusual in the data.

(snip)

The four-week moving average for jobless claims, a less volatile measure than the weekly figures, rose to 368,250 last week from 366,000.

(snip)

Today’s report showed the number of people continuing to receive jobless benefits climbed by 53,000 in the week ended July 28 to 3.33 million.

The continuing claims figure does not include the number of Americans receiving extended benefits under federal programs.

The outlook for process servers continues strong:

More U.S. homes started on the foreclosure path in July, as lenders tackled a backlog of mortgages gone unpaid even as they pulled back on home repossessions.

The number of homes that received an initial notice of default – the first step in the foreclosure process – increased 6 percent in July compared to the same month last year, foreclosure listing firm RealtyTrac Inc. said Thursday.

Missed His Calling 0

When done on a much larger scale, this is called a “leveraged buy-out” and the seller gets his own house in the Hamptons.

The suspect, later identified as 59-year-old Christopher John Prew, advertised a 2011 Nissan Altima for sale on Craigslist, but he didn’t own the car, Belmont police Lt. Pat Halleran said. He’d only rented it from Hertz Rent-a-Car.

They keep changing their name, but the John Law keeps tracking them them down.

Blackwater Xe Academi was assessed $7,500,000.00 in fines for violating arms regulations.

The charges unsealed Tuesday included two counts of exporting satellite phones to Sudan and four counts of violating arms trafficking laws, in part by providing body armor and ammunition to Iraq and Afghanistan without U.S. approval.

There also were six counts of violating federal firearms laws regarding possession of unregistered automatic weapons and five counts of lying to authorities about the ownership of weapons given to the king of Jordan or his entourage.

Ah, the challenges of making a living as hired guns in this modern age..

Typology 0

Contradict Me offers a handy tool for classifying bigots.

This is one of my favorites, one seen frequently in the wild over the past two weeks:

The Enlightened- This bigot calls for peace. The problem is, their call for peace is only directed at the victim of hate. Rarely, if ever, is this “Call for peace” directed at the person who has caused the pain. They are anti-retaliation but not so much anti-attack. This bigot will talk of Ghandi or quote “An eye for an eye…” They’ll say, “Whatever the hate fueled person did was bad BUT…” All the while stepping directly on the hurt person and remaining completely silent in the face of the person who has caused the harm. They will often go on a faux peace rant, end it with an incorrect use of Nameste and be completely shocked that everyone doesn’t immediately fall at their feet and start singing We are the World.

This is the one that, after some bigoted massacre or other, can be recognized by its plaintive cry:

Musical NotesNow is not the time to politicize.
Now is not the time to politicize.
Now is not the time to politicize.

Follow the link for the rest. I expect that you will recognize them all.
