Facebook Frolics, Take the Money and Run Dept. 0

The money never existed.

The “analysts” (and not just California’s–almost everyone’s) were blinded by the hype.

The state’s (California–ed.) Legislative Analyst’s Office said Wednesday that “hundreds of millions” of dollars in assumed tax revenues may never materialize due to the continued slide in Facebook’s stock price.

Facebook, the next AOL.

Nothing To Do, Nowhere To Go 0

No change of significance. Bloomberg thinks things will be a little better next week as the summer shutdown of auto plants draws to a close.

Jobless claims climbed by 8,000 to 365,000 in the week ended July 28, Labor Department figures showed today in Washington. The median forecast of 47 economists surveyed by Bloomberg News called for an increase to 370,000. Starting next week, the data should be clear of any influence from the annual auto plant retooling closures that make it difficult to adjust the data for seasonal variations, a Labor Department spokesman said as the report was released to the press.

Today’s report showed the number of people continuing to receive jobless benefits dropped by 19,000 in the week ended July 21 to 3.27 million, a two-month low.

The continuing claims figure does not include the number of Americans receiving extended benefits under federal programs.

Those who’ve used up their traditional benefits and are now collecting emergency and extended payments decreased by about 46,500 to 2.55 million in the week ended July 14.

Congressman Steve King (R-Not the Humane Society) on dog-fighting:

KING: When the legislation that passed in the farm bill that says that it’s a federal crime to watch animals fight or to induce someone else to watch an animal fight but it’s not a federal crime to induce somebody to watch people fighting, there’s something wrong with the priorities of people that think like that.

There may be an argument that there’s a larger context to this quotation, but, honest to Pete, what could give this “context”?

Simon Jenkins suggests that, if indeed some badminton teams threw games to get an advantage in later seeds, well, that’s what the contemporary quadrennial athletic marketing event is really about–Not the striving, the surviving to the winner’s circle. A nugget:

I cannot see how, in sporting terms, this is any different from sprint cyclists hovering for an age on a curve, waiting for the right moment to surge forward.

The concept of the Olympics as being not about winning but “about taking part” ended long ago. Modern Olympics are parodies of Hitler’s nationalist games of 1936. They are a statist contest determined by who wins the most medals.

Twits on Twitter 0

Olympic twits.

The controversy started Sunday when the account of Guy Adams, a correspondent for The Independent and a vocal critic of NBC’s Olympics coverage, was suspended after he tweeted a corporate email address for a network executive, which Twitter claimed was a violation of its privacy rules.

Twitter restored his account Tuesday, admitting that “we did mess up” when its staff encouraged NBC — which Twitter is teaming with for Olympics coverage — to file the complaint that resulted in the suspension.

Tempest in a twitpot.

Six months from now, no one will remember this.

Six years from now, no one will remember Twitter (CompuServe, anyone?)
