Truly, a Vacuum 0

Leonard Pitts, Jr., discusses right wing efforts to suck facts and truth out of politics. A nugget:

This is the legacy of the War on Reality. Some of us live under a new ethos, fueled and abetted by Fox, the Internet and talk radio, which holds that facts are optional and reality, multiple choice — and that anyone who questions this is part of the conspiracy against you. The results have not been pretty. When, in the history of American political discourse, have conservatives — some, not all — seemed more paranoid, put-upon and ready to believe themselves the victims of outlandish plots?

Hillary Clinton was rightly derided for saying a “vast right-wing conspiracy” was out to get her husband. But if that one-time utterance made her sound ridiculous, what shall we make of this constant drumbeat from the political right? What shall we make of a mindset in which the answer to every criticism, the response to every unwelcome fact, is to point to a conspiracy of bias that exists mostly in their minds?

Spill Here, Spill Now, Spill Forever 0

Never gonna go away.

A fresh oil sheen spotted recently in the Gulf of Mexico matches crude spilled during the Deepwater Horizon disaster, the U.S. Coast Guard said Wednesday.

Engineers with Deepwater Horizon rig operator BP reported the sheen on September 16, after spotting it on satellite photos. The Coast Guard said that tests conducted by the Marine Safety Laboratory confirmed that the oil “correlates” to the Deepwater Horizon spill.

The Voter Fraud Fraud 0

And this surprises you how?

A man registering voters in Nevada may have implicated the Republican Party in a felony when was caught on video recently telling potential voters to register “non-partisan” because “I don’t get credit for Democrats.”

Nevada television station KOLO obtained cell phone video of a man, who claimed he worked for the Republican Party, revealing that he was paid by the number of voters he registers, but only if they were not Democrats.

“Could you do me a favor?” the man asked a potential voter. “Mark non-partisan on there. I’ll get credit for it. I don’t get credit for Democrats.”

Afterthought:

How long before the denials? By tomorrow he will be a non-person.

Dis Coarse Discourse 0

Helen Philpot on the unreported story:

Margaret, once again I am going to have to call bullshit. I get that most people thought President Obama didn’t put in a stellar performance at the debate. And I understand that his not doing well was newsworthy. After all, he’s done much better in the past with much less on the line. But I can’t believe that I actually need to tell the media just how the cow ate the cabbage on this one.

It’s pretty simple really. The other guy lied.

How can the media continue to make Obama’s poor performance the top story rather than the fact that the other guy looked really, really great while he lied through his teeth?

The sign at a Portland road construction site was changed by a hacker to read “Warning Zombies Ahead!” on Wednesday morning. It originally read “Night work 8 pm-6 am. Expect delays.”

The story reports that city officials were not amused.

I drive.

I fail to see how the revised warning was in any way inappropriate.

Nothing To Do, Nowhere To Go 0

Under 350k for the first time since Bush’s crash:

Applications for jobless benefits dropped 30,000 to 339,000 in the week ended Oct. 6, the fewest since February 2008, Labor Department figures showed today. Economists forecast 370,000 claims, according to the median estimate in a Bloomberg survey. One state accounted for most of the plunge in claims, a Labor Department spokesman said as the data were issued to the press.

(snip)

The four-week moving average for jobless claims, a less- volatile measure, fell to 364,000 from 375,500.

The number of people continuing to collect jobless benefits dropped by 15,000 to 3.27 million in the week ended Sept. 29. The continuing claims figure does not include the number of workers receiving extended benefits under federal programs.

Concert today: I hear the sound of the wingnut wurlitzer cranking up . . . .
