Celebrate birthdays politely.

William Scroggins, 34, met Michael Abernathy, 35, and his brother at a Circle K store at 5105 W. McDowell Road at about 11:30 p.m. to celebrate Abernathy’s birthday, according to Phoenix police. Scroggins had brought Abernathy’s sister to the Circle K with him.

Scroggins and Abernathy argued while at the Circle K, said Sgt. Trent Crump of the Phoenix Police Department. Scroggins is suspected of pulling out a handgun, shooting Abernathy and threatening to shoot his brother.

Apprehended twits.

“Catch me if you can.”

San Diego County District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis said Wanda Podgurski sent that taunting tweet after skipping trial in January while facing charges of insurance of fraud.

But then authorities did catch her.

Just Following the Rules 0

Never let it be said that the Regent doesn’t follow the rules.

Virginia Gov. Robert McDonnell (R) and his family received another unreported $120,000 from the head of a dietary supplement company he promoted, the Washington Post reported Tuesday.

“The rules that I’m following have been rules that have been in place for decades,” McDonnell told a radio interviewer on Tuesday. “These have been the disclosure rules of Virginia. I’m following those. To, after the fact, impose some new requirements on an official when you haven’t kept record of other gifts given to family members or things like that obviously wouldn’t be fair.”

Really.

Dis Coarse Discourse 0

Will Bunch, discussing CNN’s stupid coverage of the Zimmerman trial,* drafts the obituary for cable TV. A nugget:

TThat’s the real tragedy of cable TV. Almost every good idea for a channel that anyone has come up with — a channel that shows trials, or a channel that shows music videos, or a “learning” channel, or ( heaven forbid) a history channel — has been ruined by that free-market thing of everyone chasing the Powerball jackpot of ratings, which apparently involves a program about ice road truckers. (Who knew?) Or maybe a poop cruise. But that’s the thing — we used to think that news was above all this. Why were we so naive?

I can remember when I watched CourtTV fairly regularly; I particularly enjoyed “Forensic Files,” which was a relief from the fantasy science fiction world of CSI.

That was before it changed its name to TruTV and became yet another cesspool of “reality shows.”

*It’s stupid because there’s no story until the verdict is delivered, and that’s not the story that matters.

The story that matters is that George Zimmerman thought it was okay to stalk and kill a kid because he didn’t like the kid’s skin color and that he’s not alone in thinking like that.

Manage family issues politely.

The man grabbed his shotgun when his ex-girlfriend showed up at his house, authorities told TV station KSAT. When his girlfriend tried to intervene, the gun went off, wounding her, according to police.

Twits on Twitter 0

Athtwits. A nugget:

Curry, the high-scoring Warriors guard, was disillusioned by Twitter at first. Sidelined by injuries for most of the 2011-12 season, Curry was kicked while he was down by angry fans.

“I’d go out with an ankle injury and all of a sudden I’d get a hundred tweets saying, ‘My fantasy team is done. You screwed my whole draft!’ ” Curry recalled with a laugh.

School for Scamdal, You Can’t Handle the Truth Dept. 0

Daniel Ruth marvels at the magical disappearance of Darrell Issa’s phony made-up IRS scamdal.

Meanwhile, the Scramento Bee’s Bruce Maiman sees a missed opportunity. A nugget:

Groups promising to spend no money anywhere in the election process were spending more than half their dollars on TV ads for candidates, direct-mail campaigns, campaign ads posted to their YouTube accounts and for donations to political committees.

These tax-exempt applications are filled out under penalty of perjury, yet groups were committing perjury “again and again,” ProPublica noted, and the majority of these groups were conservative organizations backing Republican candidates.

With his committee’s enormous subpoena power, why didn’t Issa find any of this out?

Why, indeed.

Commonwealth, Indeed (Updated) 0

I thought I lived in Virginia, but I now realize that I live in Cloud Cuckoo Land.

Gov. Bob McDonnell has reimbursed the state nearly $2,400 for food and supplies taken by his children from the Virginia Executive Mansion kitchen since he took office in 2010.

Most of the items — cold cuts, Gatorade, paper products, laundry detergent and other pantry staples — were given to three McDonnell children when they returned to college after weekend or holiday visits. Some also was packed for vacation outings or, in one case, a trip by the parents to visit their sons.

Ever wonder what happens when a shoplifter says to a cop, “Let me get out my checkbook, okay?”

(Hint: Sounds like, “Assume the position.”)

Afterthought:

It’s not like he’s underpaid.

The Surveillance State 4

It’s what we want.

PoliticalProf explains. A nugget:

See, we’ve built a culture that assumes that more punishment is always better than less; that more layers of “security” translate inevitably into actual security. (They don’t by the way: most of what passes for “security” these days is really theater; and layers upon layers of bureaucracy for “security” is just so many more places things can get lost in the system.) So just as any “cuts” to “defense” will somehow make us less secure (since F-22 fighters are central to the war on terror against the almighty Taliban Air Force), any “cuts” to “security” will apparently make us “less secure.”

Stray Thought 4

I don’t get to see the Phillies much on local television.

The media seem to think that everyone in these parts roots for the Nats or the Birds (as I understand it, a nat is a small flying insect that is often consumed by birds and dragonflies).

But I got to see them beat the Nats tonight. It was most enjoyable.
