Republicans Are Creepy (Updated) 0

All they can think about is sex (and war).

Addendum, the Next Day:

Speaking of war . . . .

These folks are deeply, deeply warped.

No Trial Separation . . . 0

. . . for the Regent and Milady. They are stuck with each other.

Bob and Maureen McDonnell will have their day in court, together, even if they would rather not.

U.S. District Judge James R. Spencer in three orders Tuesday denied motions by both defendants to dismiss many of the charges they face, to separate their trials, or give them access to communication records between prosecutors and the grand jury.

Afterthought:

A rule of thumb, though not an ironclad one: the weaker attorneys’ cases, the more pretrial motions they file. It’s the W. C. Fields theory of jurisprudence.

Facebook Frolics 2

Ari Kohen thinks he is on the wrong end of the algorithm (which is in no way related to that other Al, Gore). He reports that Facebook has informed him that, if he greases the right palms, this can be remedied.

Now, however, Facebook shows my post to somewhere between 20-50 people when I post it. If none of them quickly Like it, share it, or comment on it, it basically goes away forever. And then, of course, Facebook offers me the option of paying so that they’ll show it to more people after they prevented those same people from seeing it when I first posted it.

His fallacy is this: if someone is truly interested in what you have to say on the Zuckerborg (or anywhere else, for that matter), they will seek you out, not wait for you to appear, though I really can’t argue with what he says next . . .

That Sinking Feeling 0

From today’s local rag:

Four Virginia landmarks are among the 30 nationwide threatened by climate change-related weather conditions, according to a report released today by the Union of Concerned Scientists.

(snip)

“Jamestown Island is mostly less than 3 feet of elevation,” she said. “If the high projection is correct, then in 50 years, it would be predominantly under water.”

Levees would do nothing to help, she added. “The water’s actually coming up through the ground as well,” Mitchell said. “It’s a very spongy sort of ground. Just building a levee around it won’t keep the water out.”

I have nothing to add. Just read the rest.

“An Armed Society Is a Polite Society” 0

Yet another polite child:

San Antonio police say a 6-year-old girl has died in an accidental shooting when she and her 8-year-old sister were together while their mother was elsewhere in the home.

In more news of the polite, it seems another gun went off all on its lonesome.

For that matter, why hasn’t it been properly labeled by the popular media as an “insurgency”?

Persons often ask for them when they are in a trial marriage.

This gives new meaning to the term, “trial separation.”

“An Armed Society Is a Polite Society” 0

After all, what can possibly go wrong when the polite pack heat politely?

Police said a man accidentally shot himself in the leg while at a Wal-Mart store in Phoenix on Saturday.

Phoenix police spokesman Officer James Holmes said the man had a gun on his hip and it went off.

Another gun that chose to go off on its own. Are we approaching the singularity of stupid shooting?

Privilege Unseen, as When a Vampire Looks in a Mirror 0

One of the aspects of privilege is the inability to realize that one is privileged.

To put it another way, it’s to accept privilege as one’s due, without question, just as, when I was a kid growing up under Jim Crow, I accepted without question that most black folks did not have nice houses as Just the Way Things Were Meant To Be.
