The Never-Ending Story, NRA Style 0

Yet another is sacrificed to bring forth Gun Nut Paradise.

A teen gunman armed with a rifle shot and killed a student Tuesday and injured a teacher before he likely killed himself at a high school in a quiet Columbia River town in Oregon, authorities said.

(snip)

The victim was identified a 14-year-old freshman Emilio Hoffman, who was “loved by all,” police Chief Scott Anderson said at a Tuesday news conference. He said Emilio was found in the boys’ locker room.

“Good guys with guns” is a myth, a lie, a fairytale, a stimulant for the diminutive phallus brigade, a marketing ploy, a sounding bell and a tinkling cymbal signifying nothing–nothing other than more sales for the Merchants of Death.

Unintentional politeness is the politest kind.

Officials say a 21-year-old man was shot in the upper right part of his body with a 12 gauge shotgun by his 16-year-old friend.

The friend told sheriff’s deputies that he did not realize the gun was loaded.

None Dare Call It “Terrorism” 0

Dick Polman wonders why suicide shooters are not described as terrorists. A nugget:

The losers dumped the dead cops on the floor, sprinkled them with Nazi swastikas, covered them with a replica 18th-century “Don’t Tread on Me” flag, and yelled “This is a revolution.” Yet this episode is typically being described, in the media, as just a random act of “antigovernment violence.” The NBC Nightly News devoted a lot of air time to the shootings, yet never once dared use the T-word.

Here’s a little test: What if the shooters hadn’t been white Americans (a married couple, “the Millers”)? What if, instead, the shooters had been extremist Muslims who covered the dead cops with an Al Qaeda flag and yelled “Allahu Akbar”? Rest assured, we’d all be invoking the T-word in a climate of national hysteria, with Fox News fulminating about the lone wolves roaming among us.

Pakistan has suicide bombers. We have suicide shooters.

Other than the choice of weaponry, there is no damn difference between the two.

Everybody Must Get Fracked, Inconvenient Truth Dept. 0

Facing South reports:

Independent scientists who have reviewed a water analysis conducted by state authorities of a Texas resident’s drinking well say the chemical signatures found in the water may provide “the nation’s first conclusive link” between fracking operations and aquifer contamination.

Though a state investigation — conducted by the Texas Railroad Commission in response to an official complaint filed by landowner and Parker County resident Steve Lipsky — said it found the chemical analysis of the water inconclusive, experts shown the results say the commission was simply wrong. “And not just by a little,” reports local ABC-affiliate WFAA News who shared the results with several scientists, “but by a lot.”

Do read the rest, then answer this essay question:

Why did the official scientists get it wrong?

Suicide Shooters, the Sequel(s) 0

Field expects more. A nugget:

We should get used to it, because I suspect that there is going to be a lot more of this type of deranged behavior coming from certain types of people in American society.

You can only foam at the mouth for so long over your computer keys, and shoot beer cans in your backyard before you want to act out on the hate that has been building up for years from listening to white right wing hate radio, and conspiracy nuts like Glen Beck and Alex Jones.

All the News that Fits 0

Wendell Potter wonders whether the establishment press attended the same Senate hearing as he. A nugget:

If you read the accounts of the hearing in The Washington Post, USA Today, Politico or CBS News — the only news outlets I could find that provided any coverage — you would not have read anything about the $3 billion consumers have saved as a result of the MLR provision or how the law has benefited the Fernandez family.

The focus of all those stories was a brief exchange toward the end of the hearing between Committee Chair Jay Rockefeller, a West Virginia Democrat, and GOP Sen. Ron Johnson of Wisconsin about whether the color of President Obama’s skin might explain why some people are opposed to the law.

In politics news, as in entertainment reporting, it’s all about celeb gossip. In politics news, though, real events, data, and statistics matter, but the gossip is what reporters give us.

Suicide Shooters Strike Again 0

Gun nut paradise approacheth apace, as suicide shooters commit yet another act of gun nut terrorism.

Hours after a man and woman killed two police officers at an east Las Vegas pizza restaurant and then gunned down another victim at a nearby Wal-Mart before killing themselves, a picture of the shooters began to emerge.

Residents at an apartment complex where it appeared the two lived together said they had a reputation for spouting racist, anti-government views, bragging about their gun collection and boasting that they’d spent time at Cliven Bundy’s ranch during a recent standoff there between armed militia members and federal government agents.

In related news, Leonard Pitts, Jr., explodes their myth that the Old West was a John Wayne movie:

. . . In his book “Gunfight: The Battle Over the Right to Bear Arms in America,” UCLA professor of constitutional law Adam Winkler reveals that gun control in the Old West was actually quite strict. In Dodge City, you were required to turn in your guns when you got to town. The iconic Gunfight at the OK Corral was ignited when Wyatt and Virgil Earp tried to enforce a similar ordinance in Tombstone, Ariz. So the idea that everyone in the Old West was packing is a relic of TV and movie westerns, but it is not history.
