Mean to Green 0

Dan Casey recounts the strange tale of the “greenie tax.” A snippet:

Remember the greenie tax? It was probably the weirdest law that emerged from the 2013 Virginia General Assembly. It targeted the more than 95,000 owners of hybrid and electric cars in Virginia. They had to pay an extra $64 fee on top of their regular annual vehicle registration.

The cockamamie idea (along with many others–ed.) emerged from then-Gov. Bob McDonnell’s administration.

It’s been repealed, but yet lives one (at least for another three weeks). Follow the link for more.

Be polite to your roommates.

A roommate was showing off his new pistol and accidentally shot, and killed, his roommate.

(snip)

As he entered the living room he switched the weapon mounted flashlight on and the firearm discharged hitting Austin in the head.

The way the story is worded implies that this was yet another gun that decided to go off on its ownsome. We know, however, that’s not the case; it’s another gun owner too stupid to own a gun.

There may also be a design flaw involved..

Addendum, Later That Same Day:

Chauncey Devega investigates the wingnut echo chamber. A nugget:

The Right-wing media presents itself as an antidote against “liberal bias”. In reality, the Right-wing media is a toxin to American civil society and the public sphere, poisoning them through extreme political polarization and disinformation which is designed to generate rage and alienation among voters.

The focus of the rage which is created by the Right-wing media machine is not unfocused: it is directed at some type of Other such as people of color, the poor, working classes, immigrants, women, gays and lesbians, Muslims, etc. who are depicted as enemies of “real (white) Americans”.

Student Athletes 0

From Bob Molinaro, my favorite sports writer:

Tar Heel basketball player Rashad McCants is giving North Carolina another case of the blues, telling ESPN he benefitted from bogus courses and implicating coach Roy Williams. People may never look at North Carolina the same following revelations the last three years of widespread academic fraud involving athletes. But I’d be careful before assuming that McCants is a credible whistle blower.

He may not be the most credible whistle blower, but he’s only one in a whole damn whistle orchestra in Chapel Hill.

Tarheel: UNC BB Coach with his shoe stuck in the UNC basketball grading scandal.

The NCAA is going into the third OT of corruption with no end in sight.

Everybody Must Get Fracked 0

This week North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory (R) signed into law a bill that opens up the state to fracking for natural gas. The Energy Modernization Act will allow drilling permits to be issued 61 days after the state Mining and Energy Commission approves final rules for the industry, which is expected to happen by next summer.

The report goes on to point out, in the This Surprises You How Dept.? that North Carolina’s Republican legislators can’t be trusted (emphasis added).

The new law breaks a pledge from legislators that they would review and approve the rules before the state’s drilling moratorium could be lifted. Environmental advocates also criticize the law for failing to adequately address the risks associated with fracking and for weakening safeguards. Supporters claim it will boost North Carolina’s economy.

I am certain it will boost North Carolina’s economy. Construction jobs increase after earthquakes and fires.

Afterthought:

I’m so old that I can remember when North Carolina was held up as the “progressive face of the New South.” Now it’s gone all retro.

Be polite to your neighbors.

It happened around 11:45 p.m. Thursday at a house on Maple Street. Police say Alexander Hogan, 23, was clearing his 9 mm handgun inside the living room of his first floor apartment. Officials say he accidentally discharged a round into the ceiling. Nobody was injured but police say it was a narrow miss for the upstairs residents.
