Practice politeness.

Authorities say a 9-year-old Tonopah boy was critically wounded when hit by a bullet that ricocheted after being fired by another member of a group of family members and friends out in the desert to practice shooting.

Unintended Consequences and the American Taliban 0

Southern Beale sees them coming. A nugget:

I know, it looks the opposite, but what have I said here a gazillion, bajillion times, folks? When religion gets forced on people by government or corporations, religion always dies. People don’t want this shit foisted on them. As I’ve said a thousand times before, the surest way to kill off religious belief is to declare a “state religion.” The bigger religion’s role in the secular aspects of life, the more people run away from it.

The Galt and the Lamers and the Great Drywall of China 2

The last four days, my local rag has recapped the story of the killer Chinese dry wall, which destroyed houses and families.

If you want a preview of life in a Randian paradise of unbridled individualism, lack of accountability, absence of regulation, and rampant greed, read it.

“An Armed Society Is a Polite Society” (Updated) 0

Deal with snakes in the grass politely.

Capt. Wes Wallace with the Wise County Sheriff’s Office said four juveniles found a snake outside of a home on New Hope Road.

Police said two of the boys then went inside the home to get a gun to shoot the snake. As the .22-caliber rifle was being removed from the gun case, the butt struck the wall causing the gun to fire.

What kind of bozo stores a gu–never mind. We know the answer.

In related news, PoliticalProf links to an excellent suggestion for strategies to deal with open-carry terrorists nuts enthusiasts.

Addendum, Later that Same Morning:

At approximately 3 p.m. Tuesday, police responded to a call regarding a customer dispute at the Enmark on the corner of Park Avenue and North Lee Street.

A man carrying a holstered firearm entered the store to make a purchase. Another customer, also with a holstered firearm, approached him and demanded to see his identification and firearms license, according to the Valdosta Police Department report.

The Duke of Hazardous Has Minions 0

One of them happens to be the Governor of North Carolina, who used be (natch) a functionary in the Duke’s fiefdom.

Facing South debunks some of said minion’s lies about the Duke and him. A nugget (emphasis in the original):

3. McCrory initiated action against Duke Energy over its coal ash? FALSE.

In claiming that he’s “the only governor that ever took action against Duke Power Company,” McCrory implies that he took proactive steps to address the company’s coal ash pollution. That is not the case.

(snip)

“After watching the illegal pollution for years and taking no action, North Carolina authorities sued Duke Energy only after we notified the state and Duke Energy that we would file suit,” Rick Gaskins, the Catawba Riverkeeper Foundation’s executive director, said at the time. “The people who depend upon Mountain Island Lake for their drinking water will be protected only if the Catawba Riverkeeper Foundation, an independent citizens group, is present in Court to ensure that the laws are enforced and that the drinking water reservoir is fully protected.”

American Taliban, Empowered 0

Chauncey Devega considers the Hobby Lobby decision, a repugnant act which enables persons who happen to be “employers” to impose their religious beliefs on persons who happen to be “employees.”

It is thoroughly a transgression of the United States Constitution on the part of those who are expected to uphold and interpret it, in that it allows the “establishment of religion” on the part of those who issue paychecks to others.

Devega points out that, by its own reasoning, the decision violates the establishment clause of the Constitution.

The Roberts and Scalia court is operating under an assumption that Christianity is the United States’ semi-official religion and that it should be legislated and protected in a way that other faiths are not. This is, of course, a misreading of the Constitution–despite what the deranged members of the Fox News Christian Evangelical Dominionist American public would like to believe.

Unintended consequences may lay bare the hypocrisy of the Right-wing and its agents on the Supreme Court.

How would conservatives and their agents respond if a company with Islamic beliefs (however defined) decided to impose its religious values on white, Christian, American employees?

I’m not surprised by the decision. The venality, politicization, and subservience to right-wing doctrine of the Roberts court has already been amply demonstrated.

I am disgusted. However many times someone enters an outhouse, the smell is always the same.

Be polite at the show.

Hawk told police he thought the gun was unloaded when he demonstrated a concealed-carry wallet holster to the woman, Krista Gearhart, 25, of Orangeville. Gearhart was treated and released for a thigh wound at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville.

Hawk told police he had done the same demonstration about 20 times without incident before the shooting, “racking” the gun’s slide to clear it of bullets each time, Sharrow said. Somehow, the gun was loaded when Gearhart was shot.

And, in more news of gun show-offs . . . .

Afterthought:

They never know the gun was loaded, do they?
