Derrick Jensen:

For us to maintain our way of living, we must tell lies to each other and especially to ourselves. The lies are necessary because, without them, many deplorable acts would become impossibilities.

Church and (Delaware) State 0

Speaking of freedom of religion . . . .

Natalia Mendieta claims she lost her athletic scholarship after she refused to attend church or participate in Bible studies – optional activities that were reportedly made mandatory by her coach.

Had this been a religious institution or religious college, this would not be an issue. The focus of this lawsuit is on a taxpayer supported state university.

(snip)

Mendieta, raised Roman Catholic, was uncomfortable going to the coach’s protestant church. But she explains that she said little in protest, not wanting to risk her scholarship.

The story goes on to say that, when she eventually told the coach that she would prefer to attend a Catholic church, the coach became critical of her play and she eventually lost her scholarship. (There may have been other issues as well; the story mentions hints of a missed curfew, but coaches turn their heads away from missed curfews all the time, especially when it’s “boys being bros boys.”)

The coach is reportedly no longer at Del. State.

Still Rising Again after All These Years 0

Will Bunch captures the ultimate betrayal embodied in the massacre in Charleston. Here’s the bit the matters; follow the link for the rest:

The fact that these people were killed by a man who pretended to pray alongside them for nearly an hour, . . . .

Until white America confronts and deals with its racists and their racism, disavows the Gone with the Wind and the land of gracious living myths for the lies that they are, repudiates the genteel racism of those who clutch their pearls, express their horror at the deed, while continuing to perpetuate racism by their own deeds, racist terrorism will continue. As Gunnar Myrdal said in the language of another era (roughly paraphrased),

The Negro problem in America is a white problem.

In the larger picture of American history, Charleston was just another lynching. There may not have been a rope, but it was a lynching nonetheless. Until and unless white folks deal with the problem of whiteness, lynchings will continue.

It’s the American way.

When are we white folks going to learn to control the white thugs running amok in our cities and towns?

“Kill the Wabbit” 0

Daniel Ruth is not sanguine about the move, which will likely be successful because it’s Florida, in Florida to allow hunting in state parks. A snippet:

Don’t you suspect Tallahassee will never rest until there is virtually no corner of the state (with the sole exception of the Florida Legislature) where guns won’t be a ubiquitous, obnoxious presence?

What family will visit a state park, stroll through the woods, perhaps kayak down a stream, or enjoy a bit of bird-watching knowing they will have to deal with the possibility of running into some fully armed yahoo in hot pursuit of capping a raccoon?

Fetishes are compelling. Fetishists can’t help themselves.

And This Surprises You How? 0

Unlimited my anatomy. There are always limits.

AT&T Mobility LLC has been slapped with a record $100 million fine for offering consumers “unlimited” data, but then slowing their Internet speeds after they reached a certain amount.

The Federal Communications Commission said Wednesday that the company misled consumers into buying plans they believed would give them unlimited ability to send and receive data, including Web browsing, GPS navigation and streaming videos. But the FCC said that once the consumer hit a certain level, the data on unlimited plans would be slowed down significantly, at speeds lower than advertised.

AFAIC, the only “service” Southwestern Bell Cingular AT&T provides is to make Verizon look like a good corporate citizen by comparison.

Of course, AT&T intends to appeal because doublespeak.

The four-week average of claims, a less-volatile measure than the weekly figure, dropped to 276,750 from 278,750 the week before.

The number of people continuing to receive jobless benefits decreased by 50,000 to 2.22 million in the week ended June 6.

Haters gotta hate.

I find this particularly galling, as I was raised Southern Baptist, back when Southern Baptists were Christian, before they became Christianist. My brother once said, and I agree with him, that our father was likely the most Christian person he ever knew, but, somewhere along the line, the definition of “Christian” seems to have changed, and the Gospel of Love has become the Gospel of hate.

These “They-Call-Themselves-Southern-Baptists” worship no Jesus that I know.
