The Snaring Economy 0

The California labor commissioner sees through the con:

The California labor commissioner has ruled that an Uber driver is an employee of the company, not a contract worker as Uber has insisted all its drivers are, setting up another battle between state regulators and the ride-hailing giant.

Uber, natch, will fight back, because where’s the fun in treating workers fairly? Remember, in the “sharing” economy, “sharing” goes in only one direction.

John Gardy has a suggestion:

. . . the NFL should assume responsibility for the administration, conduct and costs related to the development of football players.

It is notable that the United States is the only country in the world in which the responsibility for developing elite athletes and teams rests with the educational system.

From my perspective of total disgust with big-time football, I am confident of one thing. The NFL cannot be more corrupt than the NCAA, so it looks to me like a wash.

Follow the link for his reasoning.

Word Salad 2

The difference between this word salad and the one it mocks is that this one was tossed on purpose.

You know Trump doesn’t have a prayer when he’s too crazy for right-wing fulminator Charles Krauthammer.

48-year-old Timothy Hal Cartee died from a gunshot wound. He was cleaning out his car when it happened. Foul play is not suspected and the death is being investigated as an accidental discharge.

My hosting provider tells me that it is migrating my site from a Parallels Odin backend to cPanel (which, frankly, is much more user-friendly). They assure me that the migration will be, as is said, “transparent to the user” and completed within the week.

In the five or so years that I have used my hosting provider, I have found it to be competent and reliable and I nothing but good words for its tech support.

If there is any interruption in grumpiness, please be patient. Regular grumpiness should resume in a timely fashion.

Speaking of Legacies . . . 0

More than 20 Republican senators rejected a ban on the use of cruel and degrading treatment of prisoners on Tuesday, voting against an ultimately successful measure to permanently prevent a repeat of the CIA’s once secret and now widely-discredited torture program.

The bipartisan amendment reaffirms President Barack Obama’s prohibition of interrogation techniques such as waterboarding and sleep deprivation, which were developed by the CIA under the administration of his predecessor, George W Bush.

The measure passed in the Senate, 78-21.

It will no doubt fail in the House.

The Republican Party has become a vile and loathsome thing, a gibbering monster that slithers and twists in darkness.

Surprisingly enough, Facebook can be a force for good.

A Republican lawmaker accidentally cast his party’s first vote for the California budget in years because he was distracted by Facebook.

Assemblyman Scott Wilk was the sole Republican to vote for California’s record $117.5 billion spending plan Monday.

He later changed his vote, as California rules allow ex post facto changes to the official record of votes in the legislature.

This, by the way, is your Republican Party doing the tough, diligent work of governance. Also, pigs, wings.

Children, be polite to your parents.

When police responded to the scene, they found Jade Sympton, 22, suffering from a non-life non-life threatening gunshot wound to her left foot.

Sympton said she was injured by an unsecured firearm that her three-year-old son gained access to and accidentally fired.
