It was billed as the “War on Drugs.” It has turned out to be a war on the poor, on minorities, and, especially, on black folks, because this is the United States of America, home of the Secesh, where, if you dig into any issue, race is always just under the surface.

Jordan Lebeau reports at Boston.com. Here’s a bit of the intro, but you really must read the rest. Nothing I can write can do it justice.

The Baltimore Police Department did not respond to requests for comment for this story. They did not respond to complaints from young mothers that their children are harassed for sitting outside on hot days, and from lifelong city residents who complained of violent and intimidating tactics that never seem to align with actual police work.

They did not respond when a former cop told me the police in Baltimore are addicted to drugs — not addicted to drugs themselves, but addicted to a drug-enforcement windfall that includes everything from overtime to nicer cars for officers who make big busts.

They chose not to discuss whether their form of law enforcement contributed to the Baltimore riots, which started on April 27 and left hundreds arrested, cars and buildings ablaze, and the frustration between police and the community exposed to the eyes of a nation.

Playing the Triangles 3

Shaun Mullen tries to understand “Clinton Fatigue” and realizes that it has nothing to do with the Clintons. It is, rather, a Republican thing, a strategy in deed if not in word. Here’s a snippet; follow the link for the rest:

The long and the short of the situation is this: Republicans have been fiendishly clever in keeping voters (and that supposedly liberal media) focused on her. If she cannot put the focus on us — as in the dividends voters should expect to reap from her presidency, a sure-thing win could slip from her grasp.

If a Democratic dill pickle had been elected to the Presidency, I’m confident we would now be suffering from Clausen (or Mt. Olive) fatigue.

“An Armed Society Is a Polite Society” 0

Politeness is a family affair.

Authorities announced the arrest of a man in connection with the fatal shooting of his 7-year-old son in San Bernardino County Thursday.

The Adelanto boy’s death is being called an accident, but his father, Julio Cervantes Sr., was arrested Friday on suspicion of involuntary manslaughter, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department.

Graham (the) Cracker 0

The Raleigh News and Observer’s Barry Saunders sees unanticipated consequences to Franklin Graham’s latest antics. A snippet:

It’s not exactly on a par with turning water into wine or feeding the multitudes with a loaf and two fishes, but Franklin Graham’s feat of turning a bank with nearly $2 trillion in assets into a sympathetic, caring symbol is still impressive.

By attacking Wells Fargo Bank for its ad featuring two women in a same-sex relationship, Graham, president of his daddy’s Billy Graham Evangelical Association, has made the bank look progressive.

Rat to Bartender: Hey, is this place new? Bartender: Yes. It's a high-end whisky bar. I recommend a Scotch whiskey distilled at least thrice and aged at least six years in oak barrels and served in a tulip glass to preserve the aroma. Rat: Me want bear. Rat turns to Pig: I love to put snobs in their place.

That’s pretty much how I feel when persons around me start talking about “craft beers.” With beers, after the first one, they all taste alike, anyhoo.

Besides, any Scotch, even Olde Rottgutt, is better than every anything else.

Funny how people believe any old stuff they read on the internet, I guess because electrons can’t lie or liars can’t electron. Or something.

I stopped listening to that show a long time ago. It’s too inside Washington baseball for me. Diane Rehm is usually a good interviewer and will ask tough questions–she’s not a craven tool like Chuck Todd–but this was really too stupid for words.

“Don’t Get Sick. If You Do Get Sick, Die Quickly.” 0

John Romano tries to make sense of Florida Republicans’ arguments against expanding Medicaid to implement the Affordable Care Act. He can’t.

House members talk forcefully and, at times, poetically about this fight. And yet if you listen closely, you realize they are talking in nonsensical circles.

Representative after representative stood on the House floor and decried the amount of money the federal government proposes to spend on health care, and yet these same officials support Gov. Rick Scott’s lawsuit to — wait for it — force the federal government to send us more health care money.

And when it came time to plug budget holes for uncompensated hospital care, legislators used general revenue funds that will allow them to draw down another $600 million in additional — wait for it — federal funds.
