The Privatization Scam 0

Jim Hightower has the latest in hip new cool cons.

And now comes a new level of monetizing public education: The ubiquitous yellow school bus. Yes, just getting to and from school is increasingly being treated not as a necessary public service, but as a private “luxury” to be billed to the families of students. Districts in California, Colorado, Hawaii, Indiana, Massachusetts, Texas, and elsewhere are charging around $400 a year per child. For the poor and the downwardly-mobile middle class that’s a real hit – yet another barrier to educational access for America’s majority. What’s next – a daily debit-card deduction for kids to enter a classroom?

All the News that Fits 0

Sauce for the goose, but not for the gander. Joe Conason explains:

Whenever a transgression against transparency is charged against the Clintons, whether real, alleged or invented, America’s political media rise up in sustained outrage. From the offices of The New York Times’ Washington bureau to the Manhattan studio of MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” journalists bitterly protest Hillary Clinton’s erased emails and her family foundation’s fundraising methods. And they will surely snap and snark about her “scandals” from now until Election Day.

Which, under present circumstances, might be justified—she happens to be running for president—except for one glaring problem. Very few in the press corps apply the same standards to any Republican politician.

Nobody will ever get to see the thousands of messages erased from the private email account used by former Secretary of State Colin Powell when he held that high office. He got rid of them and got away with it (as most likely did former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, who implausibly claimed not to have used email, when the State Department asked for hers).

It goes on. Read it.

I don’t have to be a Clinton fan to say that Conason is quite correct on this one. When she is the topic, the press turns into some weird political Humbert Humbert gripped by a forbidden compulsion.

Exercise your right to politeness in the great outdoors.

Investigators believe Glenn Martin was shot by accident while camping in the Rainbow Falls Park area of the Pike National Forest on Friday, but they say they haven’t ruled anything out yet.

They’re asking anyone who was shooting a high-powered rifle in the area or anyone who noticed someone doing so to contact the sheriff’s office. Sgt. Ron Hanavan says shooting is not allowed in the area where Martin was struck.

Picture of burning cross surrounded by KKK. Caption: Remember the good old days, when civil rights were left to the states.

Meanwhile, John Martin considers his own “Southern heritage” and the big lie that is Gone with the Wind, a lie that lives with us still. Here’s a bit:

About a decade ago, I discovered the Slave Schedules of the 1860 U.S. Census. It includes an inventory of the human beings my great-great-Grandfather Martin owned at his plantation near Savannah. He owned more than 50 slaves, and they’re listed one by one, nameless, like barnyard stock. The oldest, a female, aged 70. The youngest a female infant not yet 1. Twenty-six females and 28 males, of all ages in between.

This is as deep and elemental as my Southern heritage gets, a direct link to our nation’s Original Sin.

We don’t believe other people’s experiences can tell us all that much about our own. I think this is an illusion of uniqueness.

Greece 3

I don’t pretend to understand the nuts and bolts of what’s going on with the EU, Germany, and Greece, and I’ve been busy studying BSD because it’s fun.

Bad Tux, though, has studied up on it and thinks it’s not just about the money.

Brian Greenspun, publisher of The Las Vegas Sun, has had enough (emphasis added).

Are there times when the Supreme Court gets it wrong? Absolutely. You don’t have to go too far back in history to recall the Citizens United case in which a 5-4 majority ruled that corporations were people, thus opening the billion-dollar floodgates of wealthy individuals and their companies into our election process. How is that working out so far?

This time there are people upset about Obamacare and marriage. That’s not going to change. There will always be people upset when the Supreme Court acts. That is the nature of court rulings.

What should upset us more, though, are political leaders under the guise of conservatism crying out for the impeachment of justices and the ignoring of lawful court orders.

There is nothing conservative about trying to lead people — emotionally and otherwise distraught people, depending upon the issue — toward a path of ignoring our Constitution and our rule of law. That is the way of anarchists, not conservatives.

Inter-generational politeness in NRA Paradise:

Yesterday afternoon, deputies say the child was put down for a nap in the master bedroom at his grandparent’s home on Puget Lane off Ella Boulevard in northwest Harris County. They say the child got a hold of an automatic pistol that was left on the night stand and shot himself in the head.

He is currently in critical condition. The story makes no mention of whether or not charges for negligent whatever that was will be filed.
