Coincidentally, I watched a documentary this week called Zero Tolerance on the placement of police, called School Resource Ofiicers, in various high schools, usually those predominantly black and brown. This one focused on Texas.

Right off the bat was an example from a Texas high school, one in which a student named Keira Wilmot, an African American, arrested for demonstrating her school science project which was a duplication of the mixed chemical reaction that goes on which you dump some drain opener into the sink. For visual purposes, it’s changed to using a soda bottle, putting some lye in it, and adding some balls of shreds of aluminum foil, then capping it. You stand back and the fizzing reaction generates hydrogen which eventually blows the cap off the bottle. The police were called and whe was arrested and charged with bringing explosives to school.

The charges were later dropped, probably because of a reasonable amount of local news coverage. It was part of an examination of zero tolerance policies enacted in schools deemed to be in trouble. In such schools normal kid things, including misunderstood messy science experiments, become prosecutable crimes. And, by far, the place that’s implemented this the most is the state of Texas.

So there are a number of obvious factors at work in the Mohamed case — Muslim, not-white, zero tolerance, plus a great deal of ignorance. My judgment was the Wilmot experiment had more to do with actual science and engineering but didn’t generate as much national publicity.

Zero tolerance too often leads to zero sense.

    The stupid. It burns.

In today’s Twitter world, there is no rationality to watch catches the public mind, if, indeed, there is such a thing.

The end result, while the trip to the White House and some national recognition is nice, is that nothing is going to change, You can’t fix what’s wrong in countries with hashtags and slacktivism. Cosmetically, there’s a transitory effect but …

Nothing is going to change in Texas. Elsewhere (to steal from Dorothea Dix), perhaps otherwise.

You can’t change stupid. You can warn others about it.

And who are you charging with slacktivism?
