“An Armed Society Is a Polite Society” (Updated) 0

This polite fellow’s Jeep still runs on leaded fool.

The man brought his Jeep in to the dealership to be serviced. He was placing personal belongings into the bag and while doing so, one of the handguns inside the bag discharged, with a round striking him, police said in a release.

The owner of the guns has not been confirmed. Police said in a release “it is not clear at this time why the subject felt it necessary to be in possession of two handguns.”

Addendum, the Next Morning:

The driver in question was an ex-NFL football player with a history of ammosexuality.

Dis Coarse Discourse 2

Historiann tries to understand why Donald Trump chose to refer to Senator Elizabeth Warren as “Pocahontas” and has difficulty finding a rational rationale. Here’s a snipped; follow the link for the rest (you’ll be glad you did).

Trump seems to think that sneeringly referring to Warren as “Pocahontas” is an insult, when throughout American history, elite white families have been eager to claim direct descent through her son, Thomas, with her English husband John Rolfe. (Americans still love to hope or believe they’re descended from Pocahontas–just Google it sometime.) Even when Anglo-Americans were at war with various Native American nations–that is, for the majority of American history–white people have clamored to associate themselves with the first and most glamorous dynastic marriage in Anglo-American history.

The sad truth is the name-calling bullies don’t have rational rationales. One of the characteristics of unthinking knee-jerk hatred and bigotry is not thinking.

Meet the gentleman who is doggedly polite.

A Sioux Falls man is accused of shooting his dog in the face with a handgun.

Police say 36-year-old Michael Schwarz was drunk when he shot the dog with a .44 Magnum. It is not clear if the shooting was intentional.

Thus passeth another day in NRA Paradise.

Serenade in Blue 0

For those who fear Democrats don’t know how to take on Trump, this video may be comforting. Elizabeth Warren roasts Trump like a chestnut.

The fun stuff starts at about the 6:30 mark.

Trump has reacted with characteristic restraint and tact.

Afterthought:

What’s the deal with roast chestnuts, anyway?

Kevin Lee points out that, in NRA Paradise, there is no such thing as the common good.

Meanwhile, Chris Honore takes a tally:

Our shared reality is that some 30,000 people are killed by gun violence yearly, a number that surpassed traffic fatalities in 2015.

This level of violence separates America from all other advanced countries by a wide margin. Consider just homicides. According to the New York Times, in Poland and England one person per million dies in a gun homicide. In Japan it’s one person in 10 million. In the U.S. it’s 31 per million, or 27 people killed daily. In Chicago, over the recent Father’s Day weekend, 13 were killed and 56 wounded bringing the city’s total homicides thus far in 2016 to 300. If it were anything else (say, the Zika virus), this would be considered an epidemic of catastrophic proportions.

Hey! Rubio! 0

Daniel Ruth notes that Little Marco wants back in the Senate, having crashed and burned in his presidential campaign, during which he promised not to pursue re-election to his Senate seat.*

Ruth notes that it’s yet another flip-flop in a career of flip-floppery that rivals Mitt the Flip’s; he catalogs Rubio’s stellar legislative history.

There was Rubio’s landmark legislative victory in fighting for — and winning — a Senate resolution congratulating the Miami Heat for capturing the National Basketball Association championship. Oh the amber waves if it all.

How could one not be moved by Rubio’s crusading leadership in crafting a massive immigration reform measure? It was a stunning achievement, right up to the point when he ran away from his own bill when the political heavy lifting became too tough. What would we call this? The charge of the light charade?

Ah, memories. Certainly the hallmark of Rubio’s time in the Senate was that day when he actually showed up for work. It might have been a Tuesday. Or perhaps a Wednesday.

Misdirection Play, the Rise of Resentment Dept. 2

Werner Herzog’s Bear struggles to understand the lure of resentment. A snippet:

With the left unable to properly harness resentment (partially due to the siren call of white supremacy), the radical right has had a field day. Anger and resentment at globalization is not being directed at multinational corporations, but at immigrants.
