Seeing Strategy That Isn’t There 0

Will Bunch applies Trump’s razor to this weekend’s Trumpstorm alleging that President Obama tapped the Trump phones.

Look, the reality is that trying to detect motive, or some grand strategy, with Donald Trump is a fool’s errand. The Donald is usually living proof of Occam’s razor, that the best explanation is usually the simplest one. The guy had a terrible week in which he got hammered on the Russia scandal, then tossed and turned all night in his plush Mar-a-Lago bedroom, got up before dawn, turned on Fox News and scrolled through Breitbart News — and took out all his frustrations on one of his favorite targets, a kind of Twitter blast from the past. The idea that it might be more than a little improper for the sitting president to accuse his predecessor of lawbreaking — especially with no proof — never crossed his mind.

Multiplication of Mendacity 0

Paul Krugman notes that the era of spin is over, replaced by the era of outright lies. A snippet:

No president, or for that matter major U.S. political figure of any kind, has ever lied as freely and frequently as Donald Trump. But this isn’t just a Trump story. His ability to get away with it, at least so far, requires the support of many enablers: almost all of his party’s elected officials, a large bloc of voters and, all too often, much of the news media.

(snip)

The moral vacuity of Republicans in Congress, and the unlikelihood that they’ll act as any check on the president, becomes clearer with each passing day. Even the real possibility that we’re facing subversion by agents of a foreign power, and that top officials are part of the story, doesn’t seem to faze them as long as they can get tax cuts for the rich and benefit cuts for the poor.

Be polite to the children.

The child’s father, Matthew Wezowicz, told KARK that a friend, Jeremiah Owens, came to his house to check on him and the child. Owens was looking at a gun that Matthew Wezowicz had recently bought but the gun went off, and the child was shot.

Molten Pot 2

The Philadelphia Daily News’s Sandy Shea tries to make sense of recent events. A snippet:

The recent desecration of tombstones in Jewish cemeteries in Missouri and Philadelphia and a Catholic cemetery in Philadelphia, bomb threats in Jewish centers across the country, and the recent slaying of Indian IT worker Srinivas Kuchibhotla in Kansas have slammed us back into an ugly past. Surely we abandoned this mindset long ago – and not only those in the “bubble.”

What worries me is that the reappearance of these incidents says something ugly about all of us – and not only those who are filled with hate.

We’ve told ourselves for generations that we are a tolerant nation, that we welcome outsiders, that we are a melting pot of cultures and nationalities. I’ve believed it. But now I have to wonder: Was that tolerance only skin deep? Was collective hatred so close to the surface that all it took was implied (and explicit) permission from someone who encourages suspicion and fear?

Anne Sullivan:

It’s queer how ready people always are with advice in any real or imaginary emergency, and no matter how many times experience has shown them to be wrong, they continue to set forth their opinions, as if they had received them from the Almighty!
