The Russian Sessions, Once More All Over Again 0

Jeff Sessions as Pinochio testifying to the Senate as his nose grows: I am not a bigot, I never talked to the Russians. I'm a real boy.

“An Armed Society Is a Polite Society” 0

Politeness shoots grammar in the foot (emphasis added):

An employee at the Llano County Sheriff’s Office accidentally shot their gun in an office on Friday.

The department says no one was injured in the incident. There was some damage, however, and the office will need a window replaced.

“An employee” “their”? Really?

Grammar is not an affectation. It is the rules of the road for discourse. Otherwise, said what doesn’t have you meaning.

Clearly, the author of this news story was weaving drunkenly down the road with his or her head up his or her cellphone, like the bozo who stuck me at a stoplight a couple of days ago.

A descendant of immigrants muses on the Trumpling of immigrants. A snippet:

So what’s the difference between my ancestors and the Guatemalans and uncounted others trying to cross America’s borders today? Timing, pure and simple. My people had no more natural “right” to be here than the latter-day transplants who walk in their footsteps. They found homes in this country because someone, however grudgingly, let them in. The America that Donald Trump so vehemently insists on putting first rests on a foundation built by generation after generation of newcomers, including his own ancestors. We are their heirs, and our good fortune in finding ourselves firmly rooted here and not knocking on the door in 2017 should be the occasion for humble gratitude, not chest-thumping chauvinism.

It’s an “Alt-Skunk” 0

Skunk with colors reversed--white on black instead of black on white.

Dan Casey explains.

According to my brother, who has seen a few of these and who linked me up to the picture, the scent is the same.

Afterthought:

Some years ago, when Second Son was still a little kid maybe four or five, I saw a skunk on the front stoop. I called Second Son over and said, “Look, a skunk.”

Then we went inside real quick.

When I was a young ‘un, Tiger, the best dog who ever lived, sometimes came home after tangling with a skunk. One never forgets that acrid smell.

And it’s called the “People’s Car”:

Pollution from 2.6 million Volkswagen cars sold in Germany between 2008 and 2015, manipulated to seem less polluting than they were, will cause 1,200 premature deaths in Europe, a study into the health impacts of the fraud said Friday.

“The researchers estimate that 1,200 people in Europe will die early, each losing as much as a decade of their life, as a result of excess emissions generated,” said the Massachusetts Institute of Technology which took part in the study.

As my two or three regular readers know, recently–well, for most of February–my website experienced some issues. So as to research them, I cloned the site to my local computer using XAMMP, which is available from ApacheFriends.org.
