All the News That Fits 0

Jonathan Bernstein points out that news outlets that lean right are often preaching to the choir, even when there’s no there there. A snippet (emphasis added):

Trump’s $110 billion arms deal with Saudi Arabia turned out to be almost entirely fictional — turns out that what “deals” there were preceded the Trump administration, and nothing in the new “deal” moved forward from previous tentative steps.

Trump on Monday held a mock signing ceremony for his decision to endorse privatizing air traffic control.

EPA administrator Scott Pruitt has been touting 50,000 new coal jobs that turn out to be closer to 1,000 new coal jobs.

The accomplishments of the Trump administration have a knack for turning out to be hollow — this week has been a pretty brutal reminder of that, and it’s early. But how does it affect Trump’s ability to govern?

(snip)

On the other hand, it’s probably true that Trump has successfully convinced a lot of people who get their news mostly or entirely from Republican-aligned outlets that he’s having one fabulous success after another, so for example a CBS survey last month found 95 percent of strong Trump supporters think he’s “effective.” The problem is that catering only to hard-core partisans is pretty useless for a president, because those folks are going to buy whatever he’s selling regardless of what it might be.

Police say 29-year-old Teudy Asencio was shot in the foot Monday while a family friend was showing him a handgun at a home in Cranston.

Cranston Police Chief Michael Winquist says the friend didn’t realize the gun was loaded when it went off and fired a bullet into a wall. In a panic, the man pulled out the magazine and pulled the trigger again, this time with the bullet striking Asencio.

Blame the victim.

An Apple Valley High School security guard was placed on leave after an altercation involving students last week.

(snip)

The group (Council on American-Islamic Relations or CAIR–ed.) released a statement Saturday demanding an investigation into the Thursday incident. They say a female Muslim student, a 15-year-old sophomore, was harassed by a male student and called a terrorist. An altercation between the students ensued and the security guard intervened, along with the school resource officer, a police officer assigned to the school.

“The security guard focused completely on her,” Jaylani Hussein, executive director of the Minnesota chapter of CAIR, said Monday. “He proceeded to grab her.”

The story goes on to say that the guard ripped the girl’s hijab off her head, then was taken to the police station. No action was taken against the fine upstanding young man who started it.

Josh Marshall, in a long and thoughtful article, wonders what recourse is available when the President of the United States is clearly incapable. A snippet:

Now, my point here is not to start another conversation about whether Trump is crazy or has some psychological condition. My point is that he is clearly incapable, just in the nature of who he is, from doing many of the things expected of presidents. He routinely ignores the advice of his lawyers, he contradicts key administration arguments. He routinely goes on Twitter rage benders that create endless headaches for staff, disrupt administration policy and may even in some cases constitute or be prima facie evidence of crimes.

Officials with the Metro Nashville Police Department said 7-year-old Harmony Warfield was inside the apartment with four other people – all relatives.

The 14-year-old told police the 2-year-old was holding a handgun when it went off, striking Harmony. She was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where she died from her injuries.

This is your country on Trump.

A group of female Muslim high school students where celebrating Iftar after their Ramadan fast when they were accosted, according to Yahoo News.

Seventeen-year-old Sawin Osman allowed herself to be identified so she could speak out against the comments.

“We were walking past him on our way out of the restaurant. He yelled, ‘That girl could break a camel’s back,’” Osman recounted to Yahoo News.

As the girls attempted to leave, he screamed, “F***ing goddamn, camel-jacking mother f***ing c***s.”

Psychology Today Blogs, Richard Maxwell and Toby Miller delve into the right-wing’s opposition to the Paris Climate Accords. A snippet:

And therein lies the threat to Trump, Bannon, Pruitt, and the coal rollers of this country: the Accord’s cosmopolitan goals are antithetical to the white nationalist interests promoted by their America First anti-globalist demagoguery. The Paris deal is all about a duty of care for our planet by all, for all.

“Honest, Occifer, it looked like my airport.”

Delta Flight 2845 from Minneapolis landed July 7 at Ellsworth Air Force Base, about 6 miles (10 kilometers) northwest of the intended destination, Rapid City Regional Airport. The flight crew misidentified the runway due to excess altitude and failure to use all the navigation information available to them, according to the National Transportation Safety Board’s final report. The report, adopted May 26, was first reported by the Rapid City Journal on Tuesday.
