“And, in That Corner . . . .” 1

During the 2016 election campaign, Chauncey Devega often remarked on the parallels between the behavior of Donald Trump and that of professional wrestling bad guys. Tony Norman picks up that theme. A snippet:

Instead of meditating on the meaning of Bunker Hill and Yorktown, Fort Sumter and Gettysburg, Antietam and Little Bighorn, Midway and Normandy, Mr. Trump chose to highlight “Wrestlemania 23,” a night of World Wrestling Entertainment tomfoolery he participated in a decade ago.

The doctored video probably wasn’t intended as such, but there hasn’t been a more astute metaphor for the emptiness and triviality of the Trump presidency than using an old snippet from a fake wrestling match as a commentary on the media. A fake sport promoting fake news from a president widely considered to be fake.

Be polite to your friends.

Montez reportedly woke up in the middle of the night and heard loud noises that he thought were gunfire and unknown people talking nearby,” the sheriff’s office said in a report. “Montez retrieved his handgun when he saw a person cross through the campground. Montez fired his weapon in the direction of the person who was later identified as his friend, Moody.”

Moody was taken to the hospital for treatment for a gunshot wound, the sheriff’s office said. He was pronounced dead shortly after 3 a.m.

If Mr. Moody had been packing, he no doubt could have returned fire.

Who Woulda Thunk? 0

Some automated lady has been kind enough to leave a message on my machine–several messages, in fact–informing me that my 14-year-old pick-up with 135 thousand miles on it (and still running just fine thank you) is out of warranty.

Whatever shall I do?

Unbranding 0

Much of the real estate that bears Donald Trump’s name is not owned by him or his organization. Rather, the name is licensed because the owners think that the Trump name and mystique are good advertising.

There are hints that this may be changing.

Under a deal announced Tuesday, the new owner of the 65-story Trump International Hotel and Tower, which fell into receivership last year and became the scene of occasional anti-Trump protests, will erase the president’s name from the building.

In a statement, the new owner, JCF Capital, said it had reached an agreement to end the Trump Organization’s contract to manage the hotel and condominium complex. Both sides, which declined to reveal the transaction’s terms, sought to put a positive spin on it.

Flaggers 0

In Raleigh’s The News and Oberver, Paul Isom cuts through the crap about the meaning of the Stars and Bars. Here’s a nugget:

In the early 1950s, The New York Times reported unprecedented popular interest in the Confederate battle flag. It was sparked by the segregationist States Rights Party – the Dixiecrats – whose members revived the flag’s use after walking out of the Democratic National Convention promising Washington would not “force the Negro into our homes, our schools, our churches.”

The use of the flag as a symbol of civil rights opposition – and worse – only grew from there. “The Confederate flag … means one thing to the Klansman: Here is a friend of ‘the cause,’” reported John Herbers in a 1965 New York Times story on a resurgence of the Ku Klux Klan.

One more time, when you hear someone wax nostalgic about “The Lost Cause,” ask him or her what exactly was the cause that was lost.

Perpetually packing politeness perpetuates personal propriety (also, pigs, wings).

Quick action from U.S. Park Police personnel might have prevented a Shippensburg, Pa., man’s injuries from being worse after he shot himself in the leg Saturday afternoon at Gettysburg National Military Park.

Benjamin Hornberger, 23, suffered a gunshot wound to his left leg after his revolver discharged, according to Sgt. Anna Rose, spokeswoman for the U.S. Park Police.

. . . and another gun that seems to have fired all on its ownsome.
