Discuss political issues with politeness.

A southwest Missouri man is facing a felony charge after a woman’s political bumper stickers made him so angry that he allegedly pointed a gun at her, causing a wreck.

Daniel Ruth addresses the current kerfuffle in Tampa about a local Confederate secessionist monument. A snippet:

That (controversy) would be, of course, Memoria In Aeterna, which is Latin for “Slaves? What slaves?” the Confederate monument honoring treason, racism and revisionist history that has been polluting public land in front of the old Hillsborough County Courthouse on Pierce Street.

The Trumpled Budget Deal 0

Josh Marshall tries to understand why Trump cut a budget deal with Democrats. He concludes that it is completely consistent with Marshall’s theory that Trump thrives on dominance. A snippet:

Donald Trump’s core drive is dominance. We see that in his politics which is revanchist and destructive and in its less dire manifestations driven by a zero sum vision of human and economic relations. For me to win, you have to lose. The more fluid and collaborative aspects of human interaction seem entirely lost on Trump. This is why he is the leader of the revanchist, racist far right.

But the political or ideological manifestations are secondary to the personal one. Trump needs to dominate people. Clearly Trump felt that McConnell and Ryan are not serving him well enough or loyally enough or both. So he lashed out or tried to damage them. Schumer and Pelosi were simply the most convenient cudgels available.

Increasingly, these days, my questions involve trying to imagine other figures in American history saying, and getting away with saying, the sorts of things that POTUS 45 spouts on a regular basis.

As in, “Can you imagine Franklin Roosevelt telling the world that many Nazi protestors were ‘good people’?” As in, “Can you imagine Ronald Reagan crowing about his crowd size while touring a region utterly devastated by hurricane winds and rain?” As in, “Can you imagine John Kennedy publicly urging “the torture” on terrorism suspects and the roughing up by the police of criminal suspects?”

The answer, of course, to all of these questions is that such utterances are, quite simply, unimaginable.

Politeness is essential to strong families.

Police said they found Julian Hoffman suffering from a gunshot to his head. Hoffman was taken to a hospital where he later died. Investigators said Hoffman’s 10-year-old brother shot him.

Investigators tell Channel 11 the gun that was used was a 9 mm. Investigators said the two boys were home alone, with the 10-year-old was babysitting the 6-year-old.

The story goes on to say that the mother, who was at work when this happened, may be charged. It does not point out this simple equation

no gun } locked gun=no shooting

Slackware 14.2 with the Window Maker window manager.

Window Maker

Window Maker is the one major *nix window manager I haven’t played with, other than the tiling window managers, which are not to my taste. I’ve used Blackbox (there once was a Blackbox for Windows but the maintainer’s site got hacked and he abandoned the project, but it was a pleasure to use); IceWM; Fluxbox (my favorite window manager); and even TWM, the oldest (some would say “most primitive”) of all.

Window Maker is much more versatile and configurable than I expected. It’s been around for a long time and is still actively supported.

I expect to have fun playing with it.

Afterthought:

Window managers are unknown on Apple and Windows; their default interfaces are “desktop environments.” If the terms puzzle you, this may help.

NIMBY Nonsense 0

You can’t make this stuff up.

. . . it’s not party animals that are disturbing the resident’s (sic) slumber in the picturesque Alpine village of Biot but instead the neighbourhood cows with their noisy bells.

To express their annoyance at the situation, around 20 residents of the village in the Haute-Savoie – home to a total of 600 people – have signed a petition to have the cows moved.

The petition, signed “only by second home owners” in the village, according to mayor Henri-Victor Tournier, including Brits, Belgians, Corsicans and Parisians, complains of the “noise of the animals on the paths opposite the chalets and apartments of the Corbier hill”.
