Politeness is child’s play.

Lawrence County Coroner Greg Randolph confirmed that 4-year-old Zachary Jace Duke shot himself around 10 a.m. on Tuesday on County Road 181 in the Pinhook community of Moulton. Randolph believes the shooting might have been an accident.

Randolph believes the boy may have thought the purple handgun was a toy.

America’s Problem: Magical Thinking 0

In the Raleigh News and Observer, Billy Maddalon suggests that it’s time for Americans to face America’s reality. A snippet:

America’s current reality is sobering: Our expensive health system is one of the worst underperformers in the industrialized world (17th out of 37); Our education system is one of the worst (25th out of 37); Our mental health systems are fragmented and underfunded, with an opioid epidemic raging out of control in our rural communities. We also are the most violent country in the industrialized world (with gun homicide rates that are 25 times higher than our peers).

(snip)

All of these problems persist because we refuse to learn from what other countries have done to solve these same challenges. Remember, we’re different, better, smarter, we’re exceptional. Screw the facts!

Aside:

This condition is a natural consequence of having a major political party that has set as its mission the destruction of the common good.

The call of politeness . . . .

Investigators say the incident happened just after 6 p.m. in a wooded area along Ed Burgess Road, which is off of Highway 16 north of Taylorsville. The sheriff’s office said that the victim was hunting coyotes and used a coyote call. Investigators say that is when another man nearby heard the call, got a rifle and shot toward the sound.

The victim was struck by gunfire and was taken to an area hospital. On Tuesday morning, officials announced that the victim died.

Be polite when you go to the club.

The man, a 49 year old from Southfield, told police he is the president of the Phantom Motorcycle Club and was conducting a pat down search of patrons to ensure guns were not brought into the the club. During one pat down, the man said that a gun inside a holster fired and struck his hand.

Thus passeth another day in NRA Eden.

Subtitular Substitution (Updated) 0

Last night, we watched an episode of Perry Mason.

We had the subtitles turned on, because we often watch BBC shows and some of us find the accents problematic. The subtitles were screwy.

Here’s an example (I’m ferinstancing here):

I’d like you to meet Detective XXXX Tracy. He’d like a Manhattan XXXXtail.

Honestly, you can’t make this stuff up.

Addendum, Later that Same Evening:

In another Perry Mason that we watched this evening, the word “suspicious” was rendered “suxxxxious.”

The stupid, it burns.

The Seattle Times rounds up some #metoo moments. Here’s one:

Ali Cho, in contrast, has no doubt that an Uber driver entered into #MeToo territory when he kept pressing her for a date during a drive to the airport. Cho, a University of Washington senior who heads a leadership program, was headed home on spring break.

“I love Asian girls,” the driver said. She told him she had a boyfriend. He suggested it might not last.

All the while, she thought in the back of her head, “He knows where I live.”

Timeline of a Toady 0

Dick Polman tracks Little Marco’s fealty to the merchants of mechanized death. Here’s how he starts:

We hold this truth to be self-evident: Political impotence in the wake of gun violence is a pre-existing condition.

We all know what happens after a mass shooting — thoughts ‘n’ prayers, TV footage of traumatized kids, it’s “too soon” to do anything — so this time let’s try something else. Let’s tell the tale through the prism of one hapless politician. Let’s make him a metaphor for our surrender to routine slaughter.

Check out the politeness.

A 24-year-old man was checking out of the Hyatt Regency Hotel at 151 East Wacker when a gun fell and accidentally discharged around 10 a.m., police said.

“An individual who spent the night int he hotel was checking out, at which time a firearm fell out of his pocket onto the floor, striking the tile,” said Commander Michael Piggott, Chicago Police Department.

Police say fragments, possibly from the tile, struck three people. They were taken to local hospitals and are expected to be fine.
