The Grift in the Gift 0

Josh Marshall thinks he has figured out the “White House Gift Shop,” recently in the news in relation to the Trumpled North Korean summit “commemorative coin.”* A snippet:

Thanks to a number of emailers but particularly TPM Reader JB, I think I now have the answer. There was once an actual ‘White House Gift Shop’ in the basement of the Old Executive Office Building. But the current ‘The White House Gift Shop’ is a private for profit company which has no connection to the White House or the Secret Service or any other government entity, despite that fact that it seems to go to some lengths to give the impression that it does.

*AFAIC, the coin mostly commemorated hideous in design.

There’s no politeness like stray politeness.

Instead, police said they were told that several men were arguing in the parking lot at the 76 gas station at Seventh and Maclay streets when gunfire rang out about 2:30 a.m.

A bullet struck Donna Warren, 51, before she could reach the store where police believe she intended to buy something. She collapsed in the parking lot, said Police Commissioner Thomas Carter.

The people who had been arguing then fled.

Just another day in NRA Paradise, where daily carnage is a given.

We are a society of stupid.

Bob Molinaro, sportswriter extraordinaire, wonders just what was the NFL thinking?

What does the NFL think it’s doing by dredging up uncomfortable memories of sideline protests? Is this the price of pandering to the White House? Before the league implemented its new rule about respecting the flag and anthem, the controversy had all but faded. Good job by Roger Goodell and his keepers to throw gasoline on the embers of a dying issue.

Confusing: It’s not clear to me why the owners are so united behind a rule that passes the buck to individual teams to decide how or whether to discipline demonstrating players. It’s a recipe for placing owners in the middle of a public conflict between their athletes and fans. That’s no place they should want to be.

Meanwhile, El Jefe highlights the hypocrisy.

Elie Mystal:

The thought that a person can say racist things and somehow not be “a racist” is a concept that’s almost entirely invented by white people. It is a complete fiction some white people tell themselves so they do not have to hold fellow whites accountable for their racism.

Republicans no longer have a “political party.”

They have a hate group, and the sad truth is that hate sells.

No Place To Hide 0

Two weeks ago, according to Danielle, an employee of her husband’s who lived in Seattle called and told the family that they were “being hacked.”

The man told the family he had audio recordings from inside their house. He sent back the files and indeed, they were the family’s conversations, Danielle said.

In a statement to KIRO, Amazon said, “Echo woke up due to a word in background conversation sounding like ‘Alexa.’ Then, the subsequent conversation was heard as a ‘send message’ request. At which point, Alexa said out loud ‘To whom?’ At which point, the background conversation was interpreted as a name in the customer’s contact list. Alexa then asked out loud, ‘[contact name], right?’ Alexa then interpreted background conversation as ‘right.’ As unlikely as this string of events is, we are evaluating options to make this case even less likely.”

And this surprises you how?
