An Armed Society Is a Polite Society, Meet Tales of the Trumpling 0

Be polite to high school athletes.

The wife of an Arkansas jail administrator was arrested and charged with assault several days after police say she pulled a gun on four black teenagers who were going door to door to raise money for their high school football team.

Police in the eastern Arkansas city of Wynne, about 100 miles northeast of Little Rock, said the incident happened Aug. 7. Police responding to reports of “suspicious persons” found the four children on the ground, with Jerri Kelly, who is white, standing over them holding a gun, Memphis TV station WMC reported.

I remember that, when I was in high school in the still-Jim-Crow South, I and my teammates were dispatched on a similar fund raising effort, though I forget exactly what we were selling. No one pulled a gun on us, but we were not-black.

Lowering the Barr 0

Leonard Pitts, Jr., notes the proliferation of conspiracy theories, most based on absolutely nothing, surrounding the death of Jeffrey Epstein, and questions whether the persons charged with finding the truth will give a darn. A snippet:

Epstein’s apparent suicide while in federal custody Saturday has spawned no shortage of conspiracy theories about what “really” happened to the wealthy financier who stood accused of sex-trafficking children on an industrial scale. Twitter and Facebook have been ablaze with such rot . . . .

In a time such as this, it’d be good to have a credible investigator who could be counted upon to dig out the truth. Instead, we have Attorney General William Barr, and if there was ever a time he might have fit the bill, it was before he turned the Department of Justice into Trump’s private law firm. In his mishandling of the Mueller report, abandoning his post as the nation’s lawyer to install himself as Trump’s defense counsel, Barr sacrificed his credibility and that of his department.

The Bully’s Pulpits 0

Martin Longman tries to figure out why white, evangelical “Christians” are so enamored with Donald Trump. An excerpt:

It’s not perplexing to me that Christians have a multitude of beliefs that don’t all come together as a uniform and internally logical system. But I do notice what is negotiable and what is not. With evangelicals, not much is supposed to be negotiable, but it turns out that the truth is almost the complete opposite. You can be the worst, most disrespectful person towards the actual tenets of the faith so long as you insult and belittle the people who don’t share the faith.
