E. B. White:

I would feel more optimistic about a bright future for man if he spent less time proving that he can outwit Nature and more time tasting her sweetness and respecting her seniority.

The Case of the Base 0

At Psychology Today Blogs, Vinita Mehta points out that the conventional wisdom as to the roots of Donald Trump’s support are not born out by facts (emphasis added).

It turns out that Trump supporters actually weren’t affected by foreign trade or immigration to a greater degree than his non-supporters. And, on average, they didn’t suffer from lower incomes and unemployment more than anyone else. Also remember that in 2016, overall economic conditions were improving.

So, why did Trump amass a larger following than expected?

She goes on to cite an article by Professor Thomas Pettigrew and to explore the five factors that he identifies as characterizing Trump’s core supporters, which include

      1. Social Dominance Orientation
      2. Authoritarianism
      3. Relative (i. e., perceived–ed.) deprivation
      4. Prejudice
      5. Intergroup contact (or lack thereof–ed.)

I commend the entire piece to your attention.

Originalist Sin, One More Time 0

Judge Barrett testifying before the Senate Judiciary Committee: I'm an originalist. The Constitution was written in 1787 and I believe we should preserved the original intent of the authors, so, since I'm not a landowning white man, I should probably go.

Veteran reporter and editor Barry Golson visited Florida’s The Villages retirement community coincident with a Mike Pence rally and recounts his experiences.

It’s a fascinationg read. Here’s a tiny little bit:

This event is obviously attracting the evangelical side of Trump’s support; Pence is their guy, he of the prayer breakfasts at the White House. There seems to be a fervor in the eyes of these walkers, as if on a mission, a pilgrimage. Or so it seems to me. Pro-life signs abound. One shirt on a short, perspiring woman reads, “I stand for the flag, I kneel for Christ.”

My flashbacks strobing, I recall the San Genaro Festival, courtesy of The Godfather, where icons of the Virgin Mary were carried respectfully though cobblestoned streets. Maybe it’s just my roiling stomach, but I can’t help feeling I’m among the devoted. True believers.
