The Superman Stunt 0

Tony Norman reflects on delusional self-images. A nugget:

Hopped up on steroids and the next generation of experimental drugs, Mr. Trump was feeling “super,” not to mention invulnerable and “immune” to a virus that has killed more than 210,000 Americans on his watch. He had to be talked out of celebrating his premature return to the White House with a tasteless sight gag involving removing his shirt to reveal Superman’s iconic “S.”

(snip)

Treating America like a shiny Metropolis on a hill when it is more like Gotham City under his stewardship is a typical Trump move. One need look no further than Mr. Trump’s encouragement of anti-government militias and his tacit support of white supremacists to see he would prefer a place where the lunatics are always trying to “Make Arkham Asylum Great Again.”

Republicans and the China Syndrome 0

E. J. Montini notes that, in campaigning for Martha McSally, Niki Haley attacked Mark Kelly for having done business with a Chinese company.

Montini finds that somewhat–er–problematical. Here’s a bit from his article:

Haley said, “China is absolutely our number one national security threat, whether you ask a Republican or a Democrat. We can’t have a senator holding hands with our biggest national security threat. He should be completely disqualified from running in this race altogether.”

If this is true, Trump should be impeached and removed from office immediately.

I’d guess there has never been an American politician who has EVER had more financial entanglements with China than Donald Trump.

And this is no secret.

Kerry Greenwood:

Mrs. West said to Phyrne, “I’ve decided on my costume, Miss Fisher. . . . Circe. She was a sorceress in the old days, that’s what Jack said.”

“She turned men into pigs,” said Phyrne. “Not a long journey in some cases.”

It’s All about the Algorithm 0

At Psychology Today Blogs, Christine Louise Hohlbaum reflects on the power that we have ceded to technology companies. It is a particularly timely article amongst the swirl of lies and conspiracy theories surrounding the upcoming election.

Here’s a snippet:

(Salesforce CEO Marc–ed.) Benioff claims: “We need to do nothing short of reimagining the social contract for the twenty-first century.” (page 50*) Tech was born to do good. In its evolution, it has started to wreak havoc that is imperiling our democracy. Through false political ads, filter bubbles that reinforce people’s beliefs instead of exposing them to a wide variety of ideas, and a troublesome twenty-six word provision (Section 230 in the Communications Decency Act of 1996) originally intended to protect internet platforms from liability and to incentivize effective moderation of content (and has thus become a free-for-all in which no one is held accountable), we are in dire straits.

Maskless Marauders 0

A physician and professor of medicine who lost his own father to COVID-19 before it was recognized for what it is struggles to understand the maskless marauders. A snippet:

So why is this simple public health tool (wearing a mask–edl) not being used more uniformly? Herd mentality. . . . By politicizing masking and denigrating leaders who wear masks in public, the herd is doing irrevocable harm to our country and leading directly to the continued loss of life to this pandemic.
