We are again reminded that “responsible gun owner” is an oxymoron.

Misdirection Play, Insurrection Resurrection Dept. 0

Thom marvels at the Republicans’ attempts to blame anybody but themselves for what happened at the Capitol on January 6. As an aside, this segues nicely to Paul Krugman’s article linked in my previous post. (The relevant comment starts at about the four minute mark, after the introduction.)

Lies and Lying Liars 0

Paul Krugman marvels at the mendacity. A snippet:

So there’s only so much to be gained from interviewing red-hatted guys in diners; there have always been people like that. If there are or seem to be more such people than in the past, it probably has less to do with intensified grievances than with outside encouragement.

For the big thing that has changed since Hofstadter wrote is that one of our major political parties has become willing to tolerate and, indeed, feed right-wing political paranoia.

This coddling of the crazies was, at first, almost entirely cynical. When the GOP began moving right in the 1970s, its true agenda was mainly economic — what its leaders wanted, above all, were business deregulation and tax cuts for the rich. But the party needed more than plutocracy to win elections, so it began courting working-class whites with what amounted to thinly disguised racist appeals.

Those “racist appeals” he mentioned weren’t even “disguised,” not even “thinly,” to the eyes of anyone who pays attention.

Boebert Is the New Gohmert, Reprise 0

Mike Littwin looks at the fuss newly installed Colorado representative and QAnon fan Lauren Boebert has stirred up since arriving in Washington, D. C. A snippet:

The House of Representatives has 435 members. There are always a few crazies on board. Tell me how Louie Gomert from Texas keeps getting re-elected. I think I mentioned Mo Brooks. Tom Tancredo was there for a decade. Iowa’s Steve King was there for eight years. Look, Trump just awarded the shameless Jim Jordan the Medal of Freedom — saying he deserved the honor for defending Trump during his, uh, first impeachment. Giving Jordan that prestigious award would not be unlike giving the guy with bone spurs the Medal of Honor.

But Boebert, who knows nothing more than how to get noticed, put up a video that would go viral of her walking down what she called dangerous Washington streets, explaining why she needed a Glock at her side all times. Turns out, she didn’t yet have a D.C. concealed carry license and that the dangerous neighborhood is made up of multimillion-dollar houses.

Louis Agassiz:

Every great scientific truth goes through three stages. First, people say it conflicts with the Bible. Next they say it has been discovered before. Lastly they say they always believed it.

Freedom of Screech, One More Time 0

The Des Moines Register’s Rekha Basu explains that words can have consequences. A snippet:

In one way, the reason for silencing Trump is clear-cut. The Constitution gives no one the right to incite a violent uprising with false claims. An examination of his statements to rapt crowds outside the Capitol that day confirms they were filled with false claims designed to whip the crowd up.

Maskless Marauders 0

At the Roanoke Times, Keith Young marvels at those who go maskless in blunderland. (Frankly, the piece could use a little help from an editor, but he makes good points.) Here’s a bit:

First Amendment extremists espousing “give me liberty or give me death” as the reason to ignore simple life saving requests will definitely receive one of those wants, though I think not the liberty they pine for, rather maybe get the virus-induced pine box. Freedom without rules is chaos, thus we have a Constitution and amendments. We give up a few personal freedoms to preserve our country’s freedom. As a Vietnam combat veteran I have seen true sacrifice, even under fallible political leaders. Masking and distancing are NOT sacrifices.
