The Republican Nothingburger 0

Ashley Parker takes a long look at the implications of Republicans’ willingness to fall for the made-up story that President Biden was going to take away their hamburgers. A snippet (emphasis added):

But the not-quite-red-meat attack also offers a case study in how a falsehood can rapidly metastasize among Republicans — pushed not only by the party’s fringe but also by more mainstream voices, like former South Carolina governor and potential 2024 hopeful Nikki Haley. The argument dovetails with a common claim on the right that Democrats are out to ban meat-eating, whether for reasons of health or climate.

And the episode underscores how the shadow of Donald Trump’s presidency — rife with misinformation and mistruths and lies — still lingers, providing Republicans with a mendacious road map for demonizing a political rival. The nation experienced 30,573 false or misleading claims over Trump’s four years in office, according to The Washington Post Fact Checker — culminating in the baseless claim that the 2020 election was stolen, which ultimately help provoke the deadly Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol.

Aside:

Methinks “still lingers” is a phrase too weak to describe the poisonous legacy of government by con.

Mitch McConnell: I am outraged that Democrats would even suggest eliminating the filibuster. Ted Cruz: Indeed, have they no respect for the sacred traditions of the Senate. McConnell: The 60-vote rule has been in effect since 1975. Cruz: Democrats cannot disregard the wisdom of our distant forefathers for mere partisan advantage. McConnell: The filibuster is a necessary tool of bipartisan compromise. Cruz: And, if the last few years have taught Americans anything, it is that Republicans value bipartisan compromise above all else. McConnell: And, even worse--they want to add more seats to the Supreme Court to restore

At Psychology Today Blogs, Paul Thagard argues forcefully that there is such a thing as the common good and that it extends to actions to protect public health. Here’s a bit of his piece:

. . . the rights to freedom and privacy are never absolute. If you drive at double the speed limit down a crowded street, the police may stop you, demand to see your driver’s license, and give you a dangerous driving charge that can land you in jail. Violations of your freedom and privacy are justified because of the high probability that your behavior will cause great harm to others. The avoidance of harms and the provision of benefits justifies many other limitations on personal freedom and privacy, including laws against murder, income tax, vaccinations for schoolchildren, antipollution laws, and gun control.

Upon Reflection . . . . 0

A police detective from Savannah, Georgia, reflects on the verdict in the case of the murder of George Floyd. Here’s a couple of those reflections; more reflections at the link:

The first thing is actually something that needs to not happen: Police must not be defensive. We must not circle the wagons. “Not all cops” is exactly the wrong reaction. Even though that is true — of course not all cops are bad — it is also irrelevant. Systemic reform is inseparable from individual change.

(snip)

Here’s the second thing that needs to happen: We police need to fight the destructive reaction we have resorted to before, saying that if we can’t do our job the way we have always done our job, well then, we won’t do our job at all.
