Be polite to your fellow travelers.

Officers say the victim, Reginald Coardes Jr., of North Charleston, was travelling (sic) in his vehicle with two friends when one of the friends, who was in the backseat, was handling a gun when it accidentally discharged, striking the victim.

Charleston County Coroner Bobbi Jo O’Neal says Coardes died from the gunshot wound after being transported to Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital.

When the Truth Hurts, Hurt the Truth Redux 0

At The Philadelphia Inquirer, a Philadelphia history teacher comments on the coverup. Here’s a bit of what she has to say; follow the link for the rest.

As a white woman teacher who has taught mostly Black and brown students in Philadelphia for 20 years, I know I would be committing educational malpractice if I did not teach the complete history of this nation to my students. As we approach the 4th of July and 245th birthday of this nation, it is only right to acknowledge that by the same year the Declaration of Independence was read in Independence Square, all 13 colonies had legalized slavery.

(snip)

If the anti-critical race theory and anti-truth forces have their way, many Americans — particularly my fellow white people — will not know what historically has been done in our name, and we will be denied the opportunity to acknowledge, understand, and repair it.

Those who know not the truth will live lies.

Stray Thought, Entrapped in the Algorithm Dept. 0

As I walked across the parking lot with my bag of groceries, my thoughts were interrupted by the sound of a Youtube coming from the “smart” phone held by a–er–mature woman heading for the grocery store.

It occurs to me that one of the side effects of always being connected has been to train us that we have a right always to be passively entertained.

And we are forgetting how to entertain ourselves, let alone how to actively engage with reality.

Drivers demonstrate politeness in traveling to their intended destinations.

Police said two male drivers got into a minor car accident. They each got out of their vehicles, an argument began, and then it turned violent; one of the men shot the other, authorities said.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette takes a long look at whether unemployment benefits keep persons from applying for jobs. In a lengthy article, they explores the pros and cons of the issue. Given all the shouting, the piece is worth a read. Here’s a bit:

What she (Rachel Deutsch, who runs a support group for restaurant workers–ed.)r hasn’t heard is that the extra $300 tacked on to each unemployment check is keeping people from looking for work.

“I have not heard a single person in our group say, ‘These benefits are great, I’m going to stay at home,’” said Ms. Deutsch, who also is the director of worker justice campaigns at the Center for Popular Democracy, a progressive advocacy organization based in New York. “They don’t want to experience the shame of being unemployed. They know that even under the best-case scenario, these benefits will not last forever.”

Afterthought:

I doubt seriously that many persons would choose unemployment benefits over gainful employment and suspect that those who do are likely battling other issues, such as drugs or alcohol or personal issues or lack of means of transportation to and from work.

The key phrase, of course, is “gainful employment.”

I believe that what underlies the claims by employers that persons willingly choose unemployment benefits, which are meager at best, is that employers would rather pay meager wages than living ones. So they point their fingers elsewhere to take attention away from the starvation wages they are offering.

But that’s just me.

Boris Johnson’s colossally stupid Brexit is likely to have all sorts of unanticipated consequences, but at home and abroad. The Local reports on one that I suspect no one expected.

Working the ski season in France has long been popular with young Brits, but in the first full post-Brexit season, many job adverts are specifying that only candidates who have EU passports or residency will be considered.

(snip)

Since the end of the Brexit transition period, Brits wishing to work in France may need both visas and work permits – and it seems that employers looking for temporary seasonal staff have decided that this is simply not worth the hassle.
