Housing Shortage . . . of a Shortage of Houses? 0

The Portland Press-Herald’s Victoria Hugo-Vidal makes a cogent argument that it is, in significant part, the latter. Here’s a bit:

I’m not an economist, so I’m not qualified to speak on macro market forces that are contributing to why the homebuying economy is so out of whack right now. But I have been on the Planning Board of the town of Buxton for two years now, so I am qualified to speak about one major factor contributing to the lack of homes to purchase; to use a highly technical term, the demand is way humongously larger than the supply. You might think of it as NIMBY-ism. I think of it as the HOME factor: Homeowners Oppose Most Everything.

Every time someone proposed building more than two houses at once in town, the neighbors would come before the Planning Board and swear up one side and down the other that it was going to ruin the neighborhood . . . .

A Tune for the Times 0

Mangy comments at the Youtube page:

The GOP Brain Trust may get a fresh infusion of stupid as Sarah Palin throws her empty head in the ring to run for Alaska’s one and only Congressional representative’s position. Her strong desire to serve herself while helping to bring about the Biblical “End Times” has convinced Sarah that the gravy train is passing and she needs to grab a seat while the grabbing’s good. Although she feels fairly certain she will be ‘raptured up’ before the primary, ‘just in case’, she believes a government gig will provide her with both easy access to donor cash and another star in her celestial crown.

The Bullies’ Pulpit 0

Writing at the Des Moines Register, Rachelle Chase worries that we are becoming a nation of bullies. Here’s one of her examples; follow the link for the rest.

Then there was Sen. Lindsey Graham’s behavior during the confirmation hearings of Supreme Court nominee Ketanji Brown Jackson. Graham continually asked Jackson questions and interrupted her answers, such as when questioning her handling of child pornography cases. He asked questions, then answered them for her. He asked about her religious beliefs, seemingly for the opportunity to share his opinion or grievances. Graham had little interest in Jackson’s answers, other than their ability to prove his point. Badgering someone to get the answer you want is bullying.

However, as the Legislature proved, exercising free speech that disagrees with the Republican majority in the Legislature is punished.

And it’s not just Republicans in Idaho, folks.

Empty Suits 0

Above the Law reports on Donald Trump’s bizarre attempts to litigate himself back on Twitter. A snippet:

Last July, Trump sued the three social media giants for tortious deplatforming. The theory of his case is that refusing to let him live-tweet Fox and Friends every morning is actually a First Amendment violation. Now, some might quibble that only the government can violate the First Amendment. But Trump’s lawyers have an answer for that one, and it is that Twitter, Meta, and YouTube are in fact agents of The Man because they are secretly carrying out the edicts of Rep. Adam Schiff, who has threatened to yank Section 230 immunity if they don’t silence Trump.

Which sounds crazy as we type it, because it is literally crazy.

John Jay:

It is much to be wished that slavery may be abolished. The honour of the States, as well as justice and humanity, in my opinion, loudly call upon them to emancipate these unhappy people. To contend for our own liberty, and to deny that blessing to others, involves an inconsistency not to be excused.
