Ellery Queen:

I must have been born under some sort of curse, I live in hope always that some rationale can be applied to even the most hap-hazard human set-up.

I grew up in these parts. This is not normal.

The Privilege Flew? 0

At Above the Law, Liz Dye reports (emphasis added); much more at the link.

On Monday, the New York Times reported that Corcoran had testified in January before the grand jury investigating the government documents, many of them classified, which Trump removed from the White House and refused to return. And on Tuesday, the paper revealed that prosecutors have now filed a sealed motion to compel Corcoran’s testimony, asking Chief Judge Beryl Howell to abrogate his claims of attorney-client privilege under the crime-fraud exception.

All That Was Old Is New Again 0

At the Kansas City Star, Dion Lefler sees echoes–well, heck, more than echoes–of Joe McCarthy’s Red Scare in the tactics Republicans are deploying to stoke fears the American students might (gasp!) be taught America’s history. Here’s how he starts his article:

These days, we look back on McCarthyism and the Red Scare of the 1950s and wonder: Why did so many good people just stand by as Sen. Joseph McCarthy wrecked so many innocent people’s careers and lives to score political points?

The best answer to that question is another question: Why are we allowing it in Kansas, in 2023?

Follow the link for his reasoning.

Special Bonus QOTD 0

George Orwell once said,

“Political language – and with variations this is true of all political parties, from Conservatives to Anarchists – is designed to make lies sound truthful and murder respectable, and to give an appearance of solidity to pure wind.”

Paul Krugman suggests that Sarah Huckbee Shanders’s response to President Biden’s State of the Union Address brings that quotation to life. Follow the link for the evidence.

Oscar Wilde:

After the first glass (of absinthe–ed.) you see things as you wish they were. After the second glass you see things as they are not. Finally, you see things as they really are, and that is the most horrible thing in the world.

Michael in Norfolk looks at Florida Man’s war against history. A snippet:

DeSantis’ actions are also motivated by the reality that today’s GOP needs an ignorant population that is too poorly educated to graps that politicians like DeSantis are lying to them and who will fall for the GOP’s “god, guns, and gays” propaganda.
