The Whitewashing 0

The Orlando Sentinel’s Scott Maxwell takes look at Florida’s whitewashing (here’s a particularly outrageous and stupid example) of America’s history; he finds the implications thereof disturbing because, well, they are. (And, natch, it’s not going on just in Florida.)

A snippet:

I thought of all this book-banning and history-censoring while attending a recent session on the rise of antisemitism at the Holocaust Memorial Resource and Education Center of Florida. One panelist said the best way to combat hatred, intolerance and ignorance is to ensure children hear unvarnished truths. He described it as “The criticality of giving truth to our kids.”

The leader of a Holocaust Center made a similar point recently stressing: “The Holocaust, it didn’t start with guns and death camps. It started with words.”

Yet another random act of politeness . . .

Spanish Fork police believe the bullet came from a pellet or air gun shot from a farming field across the street west of the facility, Lieutenant Clay Slaymaker said. There are currently no suspects.

(snip)

Day care employees contacted the toddler’s parents after seeing the child stumble, bleeding from the face, while playing in a fenced-in area outdoors.

. . . yet more evidence that “responsible gun owner” is an oxymoron.

A Kentucky man shot his roommate in the buttocks after the victim ate the last Hot Pocket in the freezer, according to cops who arrested the gunman for assault.

Aside:

I’ve eaten my share of Hot Pockets over the years, especially when I lived alone, but, really, not a one I ever ate was tasty enough to be worth a jail term . . . .

We are a society of stupider.

The Disinformation Superhighway 0

Who funds the fusillade of falsehoods?

At the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Paul Wagman follows the money and finds an internet advertising company named Decide, which appears to be in it for the Benjamins. A snippet:

In recent months, some of the nation’s most prominent polluters of the information ecosphere have finally begun to face consequences for their conspiracy theories and assorted lies. Alex Jones has been fined more than $1.4 billion for insisting that the massacre of young children and teachers at Sandy Hook Elementary in Connecticut never took place. Fox News agreed to pay Dominion Voting Systems $787.5 million for its lies about the company’s voting machines. And James Hoft, publisher of the Gateway Pundit website, is a defendant in both a Dominion-related suit in Denver and in a separate defamation case in his hometown of St. Louis.

But a St. Louis company that for several years has helped make these kinds of far-right websites viable — a company that helps to finance them while at the same time making money off of them — continues to operate here without the slightest repercussions.

Rat: I have a new test for whether or not I tweet something. Goat: What's that? Rat: I ask--is it inspired by love? Love of others, love of community, love of the planet. If it is, I don't tweet it. We all have to have standards.
