“An Armed Society Is a Polite Society” 0

Self-politeness is the politest kind.

And yet more evidence that “responsible gun owner” is an oxymoron.

Musical NotesGuns and stupid, guns and stupid.
They go together like love and Cupid.
Let me tell you brother,
You can’t have one without the other.

Aside:

What flummoxes me most about the anit-vaxxers is that they are able to ignore over three two centuries of history, since the creation of the first smallpox vaccine through polio to measles to mumps, that prove vaccines work.

I’m old enough to remember pictures on my telly vision of children in iron lungs because of polio, then the vaccines came along and polio went away, for Pete’s sake.

We are a society of stupid.

Base Desires 0

David Atkins suggests that those who believe that Donald Trump, billionaire donors, or even Fox News is in charge to the Republican Party are, as my old boss would have said, in error. Here’s a bit from his article:

It is difficult to escape the conclusion that the GOP base is in control of the party. Trump succeeds because he appears to be one of them. He vents their rage, watches the same television, shares the same vitriolic personality, and wears the same hatreds. He is less their leader than their reflection. Fox News is expert not at manipulating the base—though its editorial choices do certainly accomplish that to some extent—but at stoking its outrage. Big donors don’t so much generate the passions around which the base revolves as they help provide the financial fuel to turn those passions into electoral victories and legislative action.

A succession of firearms speaks: Don't knock on the wrong door or walk down the wrong street. Avoid the park, avoid the mall, and school, and church. No concerts, parades, theatres, post offices, restaurants, trains. Better to just stay in bed, although that didn't help Breonna Taylor.

. . . and another oxymoronic “responsible gun owner” exposes a child to politeness.

The Oklahoma City Police Department said the child found a gun, presumably from their parents, and shot themselves in the leg.</blockquote>

Ward Cunningham:

Over and over, people try to design systems that make tomorrow’s work easy. But when tomorrow comes it turns out they didn’t quite understand tomorrow’s work, and they actually made it harder.

Droning On 0

The marvels of modern technology . . . .

Investigators say Stephanie Merola, 32, was preparing to take a shower in her Cranston residence Wednesday evening when she heard a buzzing sound outside the bathroom window.

When Merola went outside to investigate, cops say, she spotted a drone hovering near the window. As she approached the drone, it began to fly away, but struck a tree branch and fell to the ground. Merola then grabbed the drone (pictured below) and dunked it in her pool, disabling the quadcopter’s electronics.

According to the report, the pilot has been–er–grounded.

At Psychology Today Blogs, Noam Spencer looks at why the deaths at sea of five rich people overshadowed those of 700 refugees. Here’ are two of the points he makes:

  • Wealth bestows power. Power attracts attention because it has the potential to be consequential in our lives.
  • Media outlets driven by profit push stories that are compelling, rather than those that are important.

See his complete piece for a detailed discussion of these and the other points he raises.

Rene Descartes:

Good sense is, of all things among men, the most equally distributed; for every one thinks himself so abundantly provided with it, that those even who are the most difficult to satisfy in everything else, do not usually desire a larger measure of this quality than they already possess.
