And Now for a Musical Interlude 0

Often played on Dwight Davis’s Sunday show, From the Parlor. I really enjoy the show, and Susan tolerates it because I enjoy it.

Yet another child plays with politeness.

According to police, the 16-year-old female was handling a handgun inside a bedroom when it discharged, striking (and injuring–ed.) the one-year-old child.

Musical NotesGuns and stupid, guns and stupid.
They go together like love and Cupid.
Let me tell you brother,
You can’t have one without the other.

Artificial? Yes. Intelligent? Not So Much. 0

At Psychology Today Blogs, Ian MacRae suggests that observing how AI Chatbots and LLM’s deal with humor can tell us a lot about just how “intelligent” they are. He notes that “(a)Apparently, large language models have a Rickrolling problem,” and goes on to make four main points (emphasis added):

  • LLMs struggle to fully grasp the deeply embedded trends and language patterns of internet culture.
  • Rickrolling, a classic internet prank, reveals the limitations of machine intelligence in understanding.
  • Machine intelligence mimics human communication but lacks true understanding, especially in humor.
  • We don’t yet fully understand the impact of training machine intelligence on vast datasets of online language.

Rita Brent comments at the Youtube page:

Levity is my specialty, but know that I find it sad and disgusting how particularly Black people’s identity, heritage, and actual existence are always questioned because some don’t think we’re worthy of sharing space with them. Well— we are worthy, and the world does not belong to YOU. We won’t be silenced or sit by idly allowing blatant lies, disrespect, or birtherism claims! Vote decency, competence, and humanity— Kamala Harris for President!

An Infestation of Moles 0

From my old NPR station in Philly:

Across the country, a network of Republican political operatives, lawyers and their allies is trying to shape November’s election in ways that favor former President Donald Trump. Their goal is to prop up third-party candidates such as West who offer liberal voters an alternative that could siphon away support from Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic nominee.

Aside:

As I mentioned over there ——-> on the sidebar, one must needs vote in the real world for one’s vote to matter.

Still Rising Again after All These Years 0

As I have mentioned before in these electrons, Dr. William Shade, one of my history professors back in the olden days when I was a young ‘un, was found of saying, “History is irony.”

In the midst of a larger column focusing on a notion of immigrants, AL.com’s John Archibald notes such an irony (emphasis added):

The history the (Confederate–ed.) battle flag represents is less about the Civil War than it is the rebellion against civil rights and Alabama’s rewriting of history. It was flown as a way to fight desegregation, to glorify the past and justify the actions of ancestors who went to war against their own country rather than to release people from slavery.

Alabama is so afraid of “divisive concepts” that it won’t let students study the sins associated with that flag. But counties can run ‘em up the flagpole and call that history.

Another “responsible gun owner” exposes a child to politeness.

Yet another child is sacrificed to the NRA’s leaden idol.

A four-year-old child was able to get to a holstered gun and accidentally shot himself, according to officials.

(snip)

Officials say the father got out of his truck to adjust a trailer and that’s when the child got into the glove box, where Brusly PD says the gun was secured and holstered.

“Secured.”

Yeah. Right.

We are a broken society.
